Re: Alone

Looks good so far, but I'd add a little definition to the water and alter the tone of the blue parts on the boat so it doesn't match the water quite so closely.

Re: Alone

JJ ....this is really nice .....I like those strong colours together. I like how you have done the inside and outside of the boat showing the well worn parts.
What is that clump of little white specks at the water's edge?

Re: Alone

While the blue on the boat is beautiful, I would think a grayer sky would give distance, and firm up the boat as a main point. Composition and the boat and sand I wouldn't mess with, it's already great. Looks like your birds are confusing some, but it makes sense to me.

Re: Alone

The white specs Anne, are seagulls. :-) Maybe they need to go?

Brian and BFJ, I will look at the sky and watercolours again..

Re: Alone

You have a lovely painting. Along with the other comments I'm a little concerned about the clump of seagulls. The Dingy is great and perhaps three or five flying seagulls in groups of three and two as you have them but the ones on the beach don't seem to be on the same scale and are an unecessary distraction as are the three distant posts. They pull the eye away from the boat. If they were grayed down and if the bow of the boat weren't pointing toward them, perhaps the eye wouldn't be pulled away.

Re: Alone

Hal the seagulls on the beach will go by popular demand. :-D Those posts are 3 yachts sailing over by Stradbroke Island.

Re: Alone

Hi JJ
what a lovely boat, so well painted, and in perspective, and if you detect feeling in my comments, it's because last week I tried drawing 3 different types of rowboats/dinghies, and ended up painting over all of them, just didn't look right, so I'm extremely impressed with yours.Maybe next year!
I agree about the gulls, on the beach.
Jane.

Great dingy! Kill the seagulls - yes. Great dingy! Water pools are bit ordinary by comparison. But...or have I mentioned it?... great dingy!

Re: Alone

Yes, the Dinghy is very well done, JJ.
Colour combos are good, but I think the blue in the water puddles is too chromatic. They need to differentiate more with the blue on the boat. The dinghy has to take centre stage, don't let any of the minor players steal the limelight.

Re: Alone

Hi JJ,
Your dingy is great I have tried to paint a dingy and can never get it right and agree about the seagulls although have you tried them closer to the dingy.
I have just realised you must live by me or near. I go quite often to victoria point with camera in hand. And to see scott christensen at his gallery the old school house he is there on a tuesday.
Best Regards

Re: Alone

Hey Pat, yes I do live close, I live in Carina. Victoria point is wonderful too, I haven
y been down in a few months, must go again soon, if I get the car that is. Sharing one car can be a pain in the patootie :-D

I will paint this dinghy a few more times yet, and the yellow one that used to live next to this one. It is a same they have gone now, they were an icon on the waterfront.
