Weekly drawing Thread May 4th thru may 10th
Welcome to the Weekly Drawing Thread for may 4th thru May 10
Each week a new thread with a reference and suggestions for that reference will be posted for anyone to draw and post their results throughout the week. You may follow the weekly suggestion which will be a loose guideline to try or draw and experiment on your own and post your results. Some people look on it as a challenge… but that's the great thing about these 'challenges' - they aren't against any other artists...the challenges is to you....to do YOUR best against yourself! So it doesn't matter what other people do, as long as you do your best!! Better still - do it consistently, so that no matter what is thrown at you, you attempt it...that's the challenge!
When posting you should consider adding information such as medium, support, dimensions, whether complete or not, so it will be easier for others to comment on your work.
The goal of this thread is open-ended. This means you decide what it is you want out of a weekly challenge. Do you want to just sketch or do you want to become more proficient at drawing, or do you wish to break into other dry mediums or just play around? It is entirely up to you as the artist. You know your own strengths and weaknesses and you can find them in each reference we are faced with. Practice is where it’s at, just think of this thread as your personal motivator.
Any level of drawing is encouraged to join in!!!
Two Reminders: Different mediums are fine as long as we post preliminary drawings, sketches, and "under-drawing" of the painting, so the discussion on the thread stays relevant...and be sure to post the final painting for comparison of your drawing. Drawing can be crucial to the final product of a painting and we would like to see how!
We accept submissions for reference photos! Feel free to PM reference photos or links to Dee, Jim, Steve, Chuck, Gordon, or Barbara of images out of the image library that you would like to see here or upload your own photos...but be sure to keep in mind photo quality and size and choice of reference. We put all submissions in order of their arrival in our PM Inboxes. If you have anymore questions regarding this, feel free to PM one of us. Thanks!
I have chosen three different images for you this week. You may do any one or all of them. The first two, the bear cub and the American Robin are from the Fish and wildlife digital library system and are copyright free and the final one, the daffodil is one of my own photographs.
I have provided grayscale and color images for you pleasure.
Chuck

I think I'll play around with this one. Try and do something outside of the norm.

I absolutely love the expression on that bear! Leaving for vacation Friday a.m., so I might just have to print him and take along the ref for something to do when I'm waiting for transport, etc., etc.
I really appreciate all that the hosts for the forums do in providing ref's and challenges here. Thank you, all!

Re: Weekly drawing Thread May 4th thru may 10th
I could not decide on one, so tried all three. They are on 10 X 12 bristol paper and done with charcoal. Suggestions for improvements always welcome.
They are somewhat darker than the scanner shows them.

Re: Weekly drawing Thread May 4th thru may 10th
Well these drawing exercises are quite challenging but I'm trying. Here are 2 I did in colored pencil and went over with Pitt artist brush pens to bring out more color. The robin didn't come out quite as pictured. Done in sketchbook. Lil

Re: Weekly drawing Thread May 4th thru may 10th
Did this in my 8" x 10 1/2" sketchbook using both graphite and charcoal. I had fun with this . I think the hardest part was looking at the reference of the bear and reversing the image while drawing it. thanks much for the challenge this week Chuck.

Re: Weekly drawing Thread May 4th thru may 10th
Hi
I'm new to this forum. I usually frequent pastels, acrylics and the wildlife forums but I have become frustrated with my lack of drawing skills and I desperately want to improve. So, I have set myself a challenge to draw everyday - preferably from life - but I couldn't resist trying the photo of the gorgeous bear.
Any C&C are most welcome.
Drawing is on cheapo white sketching paper A4 size and I used Koh-I-Noor Progresso pencil 4B and Conte Pierre Noire pencils B and 3B.
