Paint out #13, Land of the Pharoahs

MY IMAGE(S):

GENERAL INFORMATION:
Title: Paint out #13, Land of the Pharoahs
Year Created:
Medium: Photograph
Surface: Paper
Dimension: Whatever you want
Allow digital alterations?: Yes!

MY COMMENTS:
We all learn a lot by looking at and critiquing paintings. What if a bunch of us do the same subject? The extra learning comes as we can see the different artistic interpretations of the same subject.

I figured it was time to do a portrait. The forum produces a lot of killer portraits and I've noticed that the quality of criticism seems highest in the area of portraits. I further think that it's more interesting (easier too) to paint a face with lines and character that come from a long and/or difficult life. I don't have many references of folks like this but I have one which I snapped a few year back at a desert cafe in Egypt. I've painted it twice and will put those in the first comment post just to give some thoughts. More ambitious folks might want to tackle to whole figure and those complex hands.

I hope we can get Mikey to participate if he can tear himself away from those Asian chicks.

You've got two weeks to paint and post the displayed reference(s). Close date is MAY 17, 2009

MY QUESTIONS FOR THE GROUP:
Use any medium, any size. Post any time with your explanations.

GET OUT THOSE BRUSHES, AND PENCILS, AND PASTELS, AND SO ON.

Detail hounds (woof, woof) email me for a high res image.

Re: Paint out #13, Land of the Pharoahs

Wow, this is quite a challenge! Thank you, Bob. I have a habit of giving my portraits a roasted look when I used color because I just keep mixing the wrong colors ...this looks like the perfect opportunity to have it well done if not burnt ROFL. I'll definitely give it a try. Would you be offended if I give him a naked torso. I promise I don't give him boobs. LOL.

And you have two incredible renditions there, full of age and wisdom! They must be twin brothers.

I keep trying to move stuff out of the way so as to participate. Well it can just all go on the back burner...this is really an opportunity I cannot pass up, my portrait work is so mediocre this may give me a boost....thanks Bob.

I'm (shaking in his boots) But no guarentees of how it will turn out. This is one of your better challenges, not including the exceptional still lifes and waterfall....hehehe

Here's my first one. A 5 minute sketch with Chinese brush and ink on newsprint.

"Darth Pharoah"

Re: Paint out #13, Land of the Pharoahs

Gakinme! LoOVE the sketch, your Egyptian like mine seems by the expression on his face to know the riddle of the Sphinx!

This was a fun break...shows why I cannot do portraits, they are either labored and dull or wild and woolly...somewhere in between there must be a 'rational natural'...it always eludes me! Anyway it is about three hours in oil on a 16X20 gessoed board. Wonky color in the pic somewhat. It is more orange than yellow in reallity and the subtleties of light are missing and the image here is slightly hazy. It is cloudy gray and rainy today. Very little light...So without further caveats:

Re: Paint out #13, Land of the Pharoahs

Corby, you have a beautiful piece there! And 3 hours!! Wow, that's devotion. Even if it is yellow, it looks very good. Love the squint you gave him too. Yep, seems like these two know something that others don't.

Mooz, thank you for your comments. I would not disappoint you. Here it is a half naked Darth. I don't know if they have the same anatomy as humans below so I skipped that part. But if you all think he does, then I would be happy to draw the rest. ROFL.

Here is one I get to play. Strange color skin tone. Since the photo is already so burnt, it's okay if I mix up some more color for him. This got to be the brother of Darth Maul. Inktense pencils with a bit of wash.

Sandra ....a half naked Darth is much much better than no naked Darth .....but not nearly as good as a totally naked Darth .......
Corby ..... you can paint portraits .....this is proof!
