'Go Figure' - May 2009
Okaay... this is 'Go Figure' for the month of May, 2009. This is where it was let off last month. Those for the previous months are listed here (Thanks Mac!).
For the newbies, this is a place where you may discuss anything in addition to your art. This is more like a lounge area, where artists gather to have coffee or drink from the fountain, or discuss the price of turpentine before heading off towards the many individualized 'studios' aka threads where the actual creation is taking place. So go figure....

Saturday May 2
Venus is at its greatest brilliance in the morning sky.
Wednesday May 6
"The Eta Aquarid meteor shower should be at its peak before the first light of dawn Wednesday morning, though the shower runs for a few days before and after too. This is often the best annual meteor shower for the Southern Hemisphere. Few of its meteors, however, are visible from mid-northern latitudes. On Wednesday morning, far-southerners get about an hour's window of darkness after moonset and before dawn's first light."
Friday May 9
Full moon

Re: 'Go Figure' - May 2009
Can a Guide or Moderator for this forum tell me what the monthly "Go Figure" thread is for?
I originally thought it was to post up our random figure drawings -- like an ongoing monthly show and tell -- but I'm obviously wrong. It seems to be more of a sharing of all kinds of stuff.
Please enlighten poor old me!

Yeah, what Dave said -"It’s were we discuss the price of terpentine Lauren" plus what you said -"It seems to be more of a sharing of all kinds of stuff"
Wow! great shot that Pauline! you ought to look for an appropriate place to put that up - national air traffic control annual show or something? Could also be an advert against talking in the cell phone while flying, lol! It'd be a hit in the right crowd

.... Michael! We referred to them as 'Fly by Night Airlines'......
Richard..... .... I know about extreme sports but I'm not sure about 'extreme painting'. Plein air takes on a whole new meaning.
PS.... Don't loose your hat!!!

Ahh, a plane air paint out. Nice, Pauline.
I just bought a gallon of Gamsol for $28 and I got a tube of of Gamblin's Torrit Grey (what's wrong with "gray?")--free. Gamblin has a contest where you can use only white, black and their current mud, which smells fishy and looks like the color of graphite.

Re: 'Go Figure' - May 2009
Does anyone know where I can find some fairly simple guidelines about what art related images one can and cant put on the internet i.e. a blog. I have had a forage through the legal forum here on WC and there is lots of useful and sometimes suprising info on there but I am thinking particularly about studies that I have done and may do in the future where the artist is still alive or died less than 50 years ago. It doesnt do to be naive in these areas and up to now I have taken my lead from you guys when we have done group studies etc but I feel I ought to be a bit more copyright aware. As a rule I keep these studies to myself (outside Wet Canvas) because it pains me slightly when people like something and I have to carefully explain that its not mine but if I wanted to put up my Odd Nerdrum studies for example, would that be OK?

Spewing misinformation regarding copyright law seems to be an standard amongst artists.
http://www.copyright.gov/
I've asked permission from living artists and photographers . . when I wanted to study their work. So when an artist asked me if she could use one of my photographs, I tried to responded in kind. It's not only good form but legally appropriate because without permission -- it's called theft. Simple, eh?
Odd Nerdrum has a website, or can be contacted via the Forum Gallery who represent him. So there's really no excuse for not asking.

I don't know the legal answer regarding the more recently deceased artist, and have used the grey area umbrella of educational purposes, relying upon honor -- giving credit where its due, and my studies of other artists are never for sale. If I wanted to do a study of a more recently deceased artist where a contact could be located, I would ask first, i.e, Andrew Wyeth (1917-2009).

Hope some of that helps.

Re: 'Go Figure' - May 2009
I've been following the guidelines in the Wikipedia commons, though I haven't sold (or offered for sale) anything Richard has posted on his weekly drawing thread from there for studies.

Thanks Richard that does help. Ignorance is no excuse and I have no wish to inadvertantly do wrong by anyone but it all seems to be a bit of a minefield, I will proceed with caution and honour. A long time ago I wrote to a photographer asking if I could use one of his pictures for a painting for non-commercial purposes but I never got a reply. I had to take it as a no but in all likelihood I was probably to small fry for him to bother with, just nuisance email as would probably be the case with Odd. I shall write to Odd anyway though just out of interest, you never know. I have even seen someone selling a copy of one of his paintings, albeit in their own style but I would think that would still be a no-no. I am absolutely not interested in doing that, just showing things I have done for my own educational purpose and interest. I also wondered (afterwards?!?!) about the rights and wrongs of the Will Wilson study I posted on the weekly sketch thread. I sincerely dont want steal anything, I want to do more of my own stuff so maybe I should just stick to long dead artists for studies.

Re: 'Go Figure' - May 2009
Haven’t been on the forum very much in the last week and here is the reason
This is a photo of Mr"G" and Me (I’ll let you work out who is who )
This was taken just after we launched and bent on the sails that’s why they are not furled very neatly. The boat is a very traditional 30' gaff cutter which has never had an engine fitted or electricity. Tomorrow I have to set up the rigging and on Monday we are setting of for France. See you all in a months time
 Dave
