"Angel on my Shoulder" - WIP

This is another rather large drawing for me. I've been working on this for awhile now off and on. I'm pretty happy with the progress I've made, and since I took this photo I've taken the time to go back and adjust the teeth and the chin. The main thing I'm not sure of with this drawing is the background. As of right now this drawing is looking to be about the same size as my drawing, "Angelic" and as of right now it will have as much black negative space. In my past few drawings I've tried to include a background, especially with "Beautiful Dreamer." I'd really like to put something in the background but I'm not sure what would work with the composition and the concept. The concept centers around something my grandmother once told, so I'd like to relate the background to her. I've thought of how Sharon Sprung will use patterns in her background and I've thought of using a patter from one of the porcelain masks that used to hang on her wall. I just have the problem of finding them and then incorporating that pattern somehow. I'm open to new suggestions on the background, if anyone would like to give them : )

I'm not very good with backgrounds so I'll leave other's to advise you....but I think your portrait and concept are very good!

Wonderful balance of light and dark, good tonality and that hand is well done. I'm one of those people who has to incorporate a background from the very beginning or else I'm at a loss. This seems to call for a dramatic shadow but otherwise I'd go with a neutral field of mid-gray, something that would make your profile pop from the paper. Just a thought.

Re: "Angel on my Shoulder" - WIP

Here is the latest update. I'm pretty happy with it overall, except for a few things. Mainly the texture in the arm is bothering. Thanks Rob for suggesting the gray background. I had considered a shadow effect but hadn't though of a mid tone gray. I'll definitely have to think about that.

A nice moment. I like the angle of the head with the arm stationed out front / foreground. Has impact. Really like the hand.

this is excellent, the hair looks really soft and the hand is fabulous. I think the texture of the arm needs to be smoother. Sorry I havent a clue about backgrounds, but I'll be interested to see how you deal with it

Re: "Angel on my Shoulder" - WIP

Thanks to both of you for the compliment and Bob, I can't wait until I can work on this again tonight to smooth out that arm. It's been bugging me since I put everything away last night.

Re: "Angel on my Shoulder" - WIP

Thank you all for your wonderful comments and encouragement.
I got to work a little tonight. I still think I have quite a few things that need to be worked on. I would have done more but my knee is starting to hurt, and the way I've been sitting on the floor with this is not helping. I'll have to try and fix everything tomorrow.
I'm still unsure of the texture in the arm, thought it is better. I'm also now unsure of the texture of the chest, it's also looking really uneven to me. Looking at the photo I just took I need to re-examine that neckline in the shirt too. The neck needs more work as well though it's looking better I think.

Wow, I love this. I can't wait to see more! Just curious, how did you soften up the arm texture?

Thank you
For the arm I just kept layering the black and white charcoal pencils over each other. I tried using one of the blending stumps (forgot the technical name) earlier on in the drawing, just in a small area of the face. I ended up not liking the effect and just cover up that spot with more layers.

Re: "Angel on my Shoulder" - WIP

I too am looking forward to seeing how the background develops.

May I ask, is that hand touching the spectacles ? (it's just that the effect is there, but I don't see a contact).

Brilliant work you've done, I like your style ....
