Question about Colourfix versus Wallis
I placed an order with Dick Blick and think they may have sent me another paper than the Colourfix I ordered.
Inside the bag with the two sheets of paper, there is an invoice for another person, who ordered Wallis paper.
I had ordered natural, so it's hard to tell, but the paper sent has an uncoated border like Colourfix, but the tooth seems more aggressive than the sheets of Colourfix I've used in the past. I've only used 3 sheets of Colourfix before- two colored and one white. I still have small pieces of those three sheets, and they definitely feel "smoother" than the two sheets sent, which are both natural colored (versus white).
Does Wallis have an uncoated border like Colourfix? If not, it must be Colourfix- has anyone noticed the tooth of the natural Colorfix to be different than the colored papers?
Thanks.

Re: Question about Colourfix versus Wallis
Hi Barbara.
I may be wrong, but in sounds like you got some Colourfix Supertooth paper. I have never tried it, but I have heard it is very toothy. Take a look at Fineartstore.com. They have a photo of it and it has a border around it.
I hope this helps you.

Re: Question about Colourfix versus Wallis
Doug- I had considered Colourfix Supertooth, but Dick Blick doesn't sell it, at least it's not listed on their website.
Thanks for the link to the Fineartstore.com. According to that site at least, the Supertooth comes on a board and it looks like in the photo of Wallis, it does not have a border.
I guess it's Colourfix, but this natural color doesn't seem as smooth as the 3 other colors I've used, including white.

Re: Question about Colourfix versus Wallis
Barbara, the Wallis paper I've used never had an uncoated border - it is toothy right to the edge. It wouldn't hurt to call Blick's and explain the problem - especially since you got someone else's invoice in with your order. There might be variations in the Colourfix paper from one batch to the next but I wouldn't think it should be so noticeable.

Re: Question about Colourfix versus Wallis
I basically use ColourFix and non of the colours have a different tooth from each other as far as I can tell.
I just went through all my papers for you, the Wallis is very rough in comparison to the colourfix. As for the Colourfix Supertooth, I can't feel any noticable roughness on it as different from the usual ColourFix and all the ColourFix colours all feel the same to my touch. I have a sheet of the Supertooth and it has the border on it the same as the regular. The various sheets of Wallis that I have is from a set of A4 sized sheets that came with the Sample Paper set from Dakota Arts of their Soft Pastel papers that they have available, another well worth buy too.
I would contact them and see if they have your order mixed up with someone elses.
Good Luck.

Re: Question about Colourfix versus Wallis
Carolynn-
Is your Supertooth on the same weight as the regular Colourfix? This paper is definitely the same weight as the the other Colourfix papers. On Fineartstore.com and Dakota, it looks like the Supertooth comes on heavier paper.
I'm wondering if this is just a strange batch of Colourfix. The others have kind of a smooth "pebbly" grain (I hope you know what I mean if you use Colourfix), this one seems more like wavy sanded texture.
Very odd. There is a local art store that carries Colourfix (quite expensive there) and maybe I'll pop in and see if they have this color and if it feels the same.
Thanks.

Re: Question about Colourfix versus Wallis
Wallis paper is also very, very white, while their Belgian Mist is a medium-light gray, not one I would call 'natural', which in my mind tends to be a much lighter cream color.
All manufacturers have to reformulate slightly from time to time, when availability or consistency of materials changes. You may simply have received sheets that are grittier because of that--or gotten some Supertooth, which I find to be slightly rougher, IMHO.

Re: Question about Colourfix versus Wallis
The Colourfix natural is clear primer on watercolour paper, so it is paper white, a barely creamy white. With uncoated borders. That is, it is the same colour as the backside (and uncoated border) of the other colours in Colourfix papers. Tooth is same as the other papers, with the same little craters.
Wallis pro belgian mist is dirt coloured. :-D And medium darkish.

Re: Question about Colourfix versus Wallis
Barbara, my sheets of Supertooth are definitely the same weight backing as all my other ColourFix papers. It certainly doesn't have a wavy sanded texture. I pulled both out last night to compare them and to me they feel about the same really. The SuperTooth may be very slightly rougher but not obviously rougher if you know what I am trying to say.
Colour wise, it is more a white colour than cream.
Take Care and enjoy your pastels.

Re: Question about Colourfix versus Wallis
I'd call Dick Blick and ask for an explanation since you have someone else's invoice. There's no mistaking Wallis' Original White or Belgium Mist medium gray without boarders with "neurtal" anything with borders.
You have a mystery paper! LOL

Re: Question about Colourfix versus Wallis
My supertooth is much more toothy than the regular colorfix. It is on a heavier card stock like paper(I think it is actually heavier hot pressed watercolor paper) They call it a "board", but it really is just a heavier paper. To me is seems almost as aggressive a tooth as wallis. I love the supertooth. Like I love the wallis. Not as fond of the regular colorfix, it is good, but I guess I like an aggressive tooth to my paper so it will hold more layers. I'm not much of a blender so that isn't a problem for me.

Re: Question about Colourfix versus Wallis
i forgot to add that some of my colorfix papers are toothier than others. I don't know if the formula has changed and I have some new and some old or what the deal is.

Re: Question about Colourfix versus Wallis
Hi Barbara,
Sorry for the mix up in your order. I'll forward that aspect of your questions on to our Customer Service Department to look into. As far as the products we carry, we recently started carrying their Supertooth board, so it is possible we sent that to you by mistake. However, this is the only brand of board we carry with a boarder. If it would help the matter, we'd be happy to send you samples of the mentioned boards to help clarify what you've received. Just give us a call for further help.
