Ruler on Sand

MY IMAGE(S):

GENERAL INFORMATION:
Title: Ruler on Sand
Year Created:
Medium: Acrylic
Surface: Canvas
Dimension: 100 x 140 cm (@ 40 x 55 in)
Allow digital alterations?: Yes!

MY COMMENTS:
This is the second in my ruler series. You can see the first "Ruler on Green Table" here:
http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/showthread.php?t=558284

Notes:
I use a lot of volcanic ash in my acrylic for texture buildup. The metal ruler has a high gloss va
ish on top, as well as some iridescent colors, whereas the sand is mostly matt.

The lines and numbers on the ruler were painted with an acrylic pen against a straight edge, though they are not perfect.

MY QUESTIONS FOR THE GROUP:
Any critiques are welcome.

At this size, your picture must look quite dramatic in person. I find the uploading of images on these boards, do not do them justice at all, sadly.

Allison R--What is your motivation of this subject (content)? Right now the painting is divided into two very different elements. One very representational and graphical--the ruler, and the other very abstract and painterly--the colorful paint. I'm just not sure what your point is--no offense. If you are trying to say something more than "ruler and sand" then say it. Give the viewer a lead to your content. Otherwise it's pointless.

Point is irony - things are not always as they first appear. Often everyday objects, like a ruler or piece of paper or sudoku... has great beauty; the rhythmic repeating lines, the way light reflect off the supposedly flat surface. For example my metal ruler is not flat silver, it has color and iridescent medium because when light refracts off it, you get wonderful blues and greens....
