"Stop at Ollie's"

Hi, everyone. Havn't posted in awhile- have been painting for my Urban Impressions show in May. Here's one for your honest critiques please:

Title: "Stop at Ollie's"
Medium: Acrylic ( of course!)

nice job, it feels like a town in the midwest. I like the flower pot outside the building... it wouldn't last long in LA or any other big town!!

The stop sign really adds a lot to this piece. Good work on the shadows. The palette is warm and pleasing. I see 3 small things on this to that would punch it up a bit:

1: On the large building a bit of shadow on the ledge, as in the second tallest building

2: The building with the 4 windows might work better if you darken the panes as in the other buildings

3: The sky in the large building could use a bit more softer whites. It looks painted around the building rather than being the bg that you did so well on the other side

These are really easy fixes if you choose to do them,

I see what Tony means, but wow is this really well done!! A few tweaks and it would be perfect!! We live in a small town...surrounded by more small towns...this is so neat!!

You have reaaly nailed the colors of brick and pavement on a sunny day.A very peaceful scene indeed. The building with the four blue windows..the top two windows could use a little straightening and I wonder about the angle of the roofline of the building in front of it.

Tony Thanks for taking the time to make your much appreciated critique! I will certainly study your remarks and make adjustments as I see fit. I try so very hard to "paint what I see", as we are so often told by those masters that have preceeded us.

I really like this painting. You've captured the feel of the small town perfectly. Lovely warm colours & nice sense of depth. I like the street lamp on the right - balances the composition very well. I wondered about the roof line on the vine covered building too, but then decided that it must be a slanted roof.

Gayle and Jim: Winston-Salem is known as the "City of the Arts". This is just one of many charming and interesting places to visit here. The farthest building (with the chimney stack) in my painting is the "Brookstown Inn" a wonderful lodging and conference center conversion of an old cotton mill, the former "Salem Cotton Company".
