Rick, this are all very nice... the first and the 4th are just special! The 2nd and 3rd has some shoulder width inconsistencies, but your lines are very individualistic.

I wonder, do you sort of block out the entire shape on the page, or do you start to draw from one end of the page until you reach the other?

Re: Found a life drawing drop-in.

Thanks Roy, Trevor, and Dave! My objective last night was to give myself permission to play with my drawing, but I was only moderately successful with that. Heh.

Roy, I use different strategies depending on what I am drawing, and what is working. However I think you recognized that most of these started with a focal area and then worked outward. And this for me often introduces inconsistencies in the proportions.

In fact, the 10 minute conte, was probably more like the last 7 or 8 minutes of a 20 minute pose, because I turned the paper over in frustration and started anew. The first attempt was working outward, and the relationships between shapes got lost while dealing with the foreshortening. Live and learn - so I decided to block in the whole figure and only got so far as blocking in.

Overall though, it was a very enjoyable evening of drawing, and I came away relaxed after quite a long week at work.

Thanks very much for taking the time to comment! I really appreciate the insights I get from others.

Re: Found a life drawing drop-in.

Hello Rick, if you havent dropped into a life session for a long time, it can take a little while to get your bearings and decide what your focus is and how to go about things, it's all about trying to accurately depict the form, angles, shapes, light and shadow etc and practicing using your medium in the most effective manner...and it quickly shows up our shortcomings!
I like your head studies... expressively caught, and the figures themselves pretty well observed, I like the second last for the sensitive shading, and the last for the expression.

Its good you can see the detail however I think it is side tracking you from the main objective which is good shape drawing. I like the lying down figure because I can see you are working out the shapes, directions and proportions and it is more successful because of that.
