April Challenge

Thanks to Doug for March's Challenge; well done everyone! Once again, I've not managed to achieve anything remotely print-related and haven't taken up any of these yet. SIGH.

So for this month, as it snowed here yesterday (yeah, I know, we're pretty spoiled here in Lotus Land on the Wet Coast with early spring compared to much of the rest of Canada and a considerable portion of the US), I am presenting you with Spring-inspired images. Let's try and bring it on faster with some art enthusiasm.

Any printmaking media, any dimension, any interpretation welcome and encouraged.

Select from one of the following photographs downloaded from the RIL as your reference. You may do whatever you want based on these images (i.e. you can rearrange the composition, you can crop, you can invert colours or make it monochrome, etc.). You may do more than one work based on any one of these images, and of course, work on as many of these images as you wish!

Please only use this thread to upload your work or to discuss the works of others referencing this challenge only. If you're doing your own stuff for this month, please create a new thread for discussion; we definitely want to see, just in a different thread! Feel free to upload "work in progress" posts as well as finished challenge posts.

When you upload your work, please post a reply to this thread that includes:

Reference to the WC member who took the photo (their name will be listed below the photo)
Printmaking technique(s) used
Ink(s) used
Support(s) used
Dimensions of work
Any thoughts & comments

and, of course

An image of the work you created!!

Here are the images to choose from:

Primulas by mustcreate

A Basket Full by lisilk

Sunning Turtles by sunbeam263

Ducklings by mdefeiter

Palais Royal, Paris by Olga

NB about using RIL photos for work from here:

Quote:
1. It’s generally considered good etiquette to let the artist who posted the photo know that you are using the photo to create art.
2. You can sell the art you create from the photo, and you hold the copyright to that art you create. However, the original photographer maintains the copyright to the photo itself.

Go forth and print!!

Thanks!!
Amie

Re: April Challenge

Ooh, so hard to choose. I'm torn between the flowers and the turtles for a white line print. Decisions, decisions.

Re: April Challenge

Welcome to the site, Briz... The The challenges haven't been active for a while- I think that we all had a busy summer and didn't get to them! Hopefully we can get some challenges going in the near future.

Re: April Challenge

Hi Briz & welcome to the printmaking forum! I stopped posting the challenges after April, because no one posted any work on the April challenge, and I figured everyone was too busy otherwise to do this for a while.

If people are interested in the challenge again, please let me know (post here), and I'll set one up for December asap.

Cheers!
Amie

Re: April Challenge

Basically, someone (has been mostly me in the past) picks a handful of images from the Wet Canvas Reference Image Library, posts them, and you choose whichever image you'd like to try your hand at turning into a print. You can use whatever printmaking technique you're interested in, do whatever kind of interpretation you want, it's totally open. When you've finished the print, post it to the thread that the challenge has opened with, and share your experiences. This is all about providing those who might be interested in participating with some ideas, inspiration, and a few images to work from, just to get their creative juices flowing.

If you look at the thread & posts from the February 2009 challenge, you'll get the idea of what goes on.

Re: April Challenge

Well, the idea is to get it done within the month, but no, not really; if you pick an image and work on it, then just update us on the challenge thread with your progress until you're done. It's not strict, just a guideline. No one will mind if you take a while to get a print accomplished based on one of the images, especially because your studio isn't in your house and you can't mosey on down there whenever you feel like working on something.

Re: April Challenge

Hi Briz and all,

I too am new to Wet Canvas and this thread. I'm messing around with etching -- if anyone had told me a year ago I would be dipping my fingers in nitric acid for fun, I'd have called them crazy.

I bought an old press this summer, had a few lessons, and am now deeply engrossed. I thought I'd wander in here to see what other folks are up to.

Now what I have to do is figure out how to get images up here, how to link, and how to remember where, in the sprawling Wet Canvas site, this particular thread is so I can get back to it. :-)
