Arrow The Plant Parade: April '09

The Plant Parade:April 2009

Quite simply, the project this month is to use red flowers and create a piece of artwork in whichever medium you wish, whatever style you wish.

I have tried to select flowers (all courtey of our 'resident photographer' Macdragon! ) which show the vast range of this primary colour from the yellow reds to the magentas.

Red can be quite a difficult colour to portray in paint. Easy enough to use the ready-mixed colours, but what about lightening it while avoiding pink? What about darkening it without making mud? How do we do highlights on red? How do we make some parts come forward and others retreat, when red is such a vibrant, in-your-face colour?

These then are the challenges this month!

Use any one or more of Mac's photos shown below: crop, enlarge, miniaturise, simplify, exaggerate ... whatever you wish, but make your main focus RED!

Reveal date for this project is 25thApril.

Above all - enjoy yourselves!

I agree these are gorgeous flowers, there's no resisting so I'll be giving it another go. That next to last photo, the rose oh my, now that's a hook to play with the color of the month!!! Thanks Maureen and MacDragon!

So red it is!
Lovely photos, now just a question of which one to do. Do you know the name of the 5th flower?

I'm going to do my best to get a painting done by the 25th. I'll be with my grandsons from April 7-14, so that really cuts into my time but I'm gonna try! These are beautiful photos. I'd also like to know the kind of flower in photo 5 as well as photo 8. Thanks!

Hi Violetta,
pic 5 is of a dahlia.

I'm also doing grandma duty with my grand daughter over the next two weeks. Yes they occupy a lot of time (all lovely though). One forgets how much LOL

Re: The Plant Parade: April '09

1 and 2 Epiphyllum (thanks Dewi )

6 and 7 look like scabious

8 is a dahlia also

10 is a hollyhock

Apart from the last two, these pics are all from Mac's Spring Flowers thread and sometimes people name them for him - might take a little searching though!

Re: The Plant Parade: April '09

Hi Maureen, I think #1 and 2 are a kind of cacti flowers, judging from the leaves.
Flowers and leaves look similar to my midnight queen except these flowers open/bloom in the morning.

Interesting challenge

Edit: found the name Maureen, it is Epiphyllum

Hi,
My name is Denise and I love to photograph, paint, and draw flowers. I would like to try one of these-maybe in watercolor and colored pencils. We'll see how it goes.
