PLANT PARADE, a forum project - MARCH '09

Welcome to March’s Plant Parade project.

I'm hosting this month and I hope we will have fun painting in the deceptively simple style of Raoul Dufy.

Dufy (1877 – 1953) was initially part of the Fauvists (wild beasts) group, tried cubism and eventually developing his own calligraphic and colourful trademark style (often referred to as stenographic). The lightness and colour of his paintings always makes me feel happy when I see his work.

Read his biography here
http://www.artinthepicture.com
or here
http://www.dropbears.com

See his artwork using the following links:

Anemonies

Bouquet d'arums

Poppies and iris

Bouquet des fleurs

You'll see immediately how stylised his paintings are and I hope you also see some of the joyfulness that I find in his work.

For this month's project, I'd like you to take some flower images and try to find the essential feeling of a Raoul Dufy flower arrangement – stylise, simplify and create line, pattern and colour.

Here are some references taken by myself:
Frangipani

Rudbeckia

Calla Lily

Iris

Tulips and Marigolds

Irises

Tulips

And don't forget Macdragons beautiful shots Spring flowers

As usual, any medium is acceptable and you have until 25th of this month.
On or after that date, please upload your work to this thread, with a little information on medium, support and refs. used.

Please try your hardest to convey an influence of the Dufy style!

Most importantly though, is to enjoy the project and have fun!

HAPPY PAINTING

Oh Marion, you got me with the poppies and tulips, well all of them actually. Just excellent photos; I may have to do more than one. Thanks for hosting!

Oh my, Maureen.... my reaction is quite the opposite! I'm thinking this one may be way too hard for me to try! I may give it a go, but it looks like the hardest one, yet.

Lol Beth - I did use the word 'deceptively' !!

I haven't a clue yet how to tackle this! ..... but the pens might come in handy!

Re: PLANT PARADE, a forum project - MARCH '09

Interesting project Marion and thank you for hosting.

I seldom comment or make some promises here, Maureen knows very well.
But this one made me think of artists using wc mostly; esp. Kay, Bonnie and Maureen (using her liquid acrylic).

You have company here Beth

If I choose to use wc, I have only Alizarin Crimson, Cerulean Blue, Lemon Yellow and Cadmium Orange, could someone give some suggestion what colours I have to add? Kay? Thanks.

Re: PLANT PARADE, a forum project - MARCH '09

Kay - Welcome aboard I look forward to see your take on this.
Maureen - Yes deceptively simple indeed
What type of pens do you use?
Beth - Oh please do join in, you do such beautiful work and your use of washes should give you a good basis.
Dewi - Welcome aboard. Yes his style lends itself to water colour. I would suggest adding maybe a red - I don't think you would need much more. The cereleum blue is typical of Dufy.

I'm thinking maybe loose watercolour or acrylic washes with watercolour pencils for the details and lines, or maybe perhaps pastel pencil. This is also out of my comfort zone but I'm hoping that if I can achieve something of the looseness then that would be good for me.

As an aside - I chose Dufy as, here in Nice, you often come across his posters as he painted a lot of scenes from around this area. My initial reaction is always - what a simple painting but then always have to have a second and third look to absorb it and always find things that are missed in the first 'looking'.

Hi Valri
Welcome to the plant parade. I'm sure you'll have fun.

There is no official sign up - just post your paintings on the 25th (or after) of the month in this thread. If you aren't finished by the 25th don't worry - just post your painting in progress or post later when finished.

Good tip, Maureen. Perhaps some brush pens?

Valri, you'll love it! Last month, only 5 of us participated (last I looked) but often, there are 10-20 of us. It's really fun to see what everyone does with the same theme of sorts.

Re: PLANT PARADE, a forum project - MARCH '09

I love that swift, sketchy feel to these paintings - as if he couldn't get the image down fast enough!

Some of the outlines also looked as if they were bleeding or blending into the b/ground, but following the lines shape - so don't know if that was an accidental effect or deliberately applied. Will try some 'experiments'!

His colours in the florals are also pale tones - not the vibrant colours of the Fauves' landscapes - at least that's how I see them. ....... so if using acrylics, perhaps adding white to the mix I think. Hmmmm.

Valri -we'll keep you right!

I'll advertise this in the WC Digest - maybe get a few more 'browsers'
