Re: Weekly OP Sketch Thread Feb 23-March 1

Your ellipses look passable to me, Yusuke! I always think your drawings go beyond realism anyway. I mean, they make one feel, smell, and sense the subject far better than an anctual photograph, or even a photo-realistic rendering. That, to me, is art!

I like your self-portrait, Sandra. I'm always impressed when someone uses surprising color that is still spot-on in value. Now I am going to embarrass myself and ask a really dumb question: How does one draw a self-portrait that is not a mirror image of oneself? I can imagine a set-up using two mirrors but otherwise don't know how one would go about it unless drawing from a photo.

I can think of one way that's similar to a mirror but not mirrored -- use a webcam like my Logitech Pro 9000 and watch the preview screen. That'd be realtime with motion like using a mirror but not mirrored. Same as photo but better for practicing drawing from life.

Yusuke- As always, a please to see your food sketches. Now I'm hungry!

Sandra- did you use a photo or a mirror? I've been thinking about doing a self portrait, but haven't gained the confidence yet. Yours is very nice. Maybe you think it doesn't flatter you, but we don't know what you look like, so it looks like a great portrait sketch to me!

Re: Weekly OP Sketch Thread Feb 23-March 1

Thank you, Pat, Barbara, Bill, Robert, Herb for your comment.

My self portrait is unflattering only because this time, I drew it with my mirror looking up at me and so there was more chin because it gets boring if I only do it at the same angle . It is actually one of my better self portraits despite the fact that all the guys in the house said I looked like a monster because of the color tone. But this is the first time I did such a huge piece and went by free hand without draft or measuring.

As to the colors...haha...I'm still experimenting as to what colors I could use from my limited Gallery OP's for skin tone. Barbara, I prefer mirror image or actual life models (my kids) to photos and this one is just a simple mirror. So , yes, Herb. The left on the picture is my right and vice versa.

Re: Weekly OP Sketch Thread Feb 23-March 1

Well, after a long very difficult day, one of my worst sick days, I started feeling better late tonight so I did a pink flower study for my flower study thread. It's fast, only a 20 minute painting and I didn't actually have the control or focus that I usually do, but wasn't too bad. I especially like the background on it.

I may try this one more than once too, maybe if I try it when I'm not this deep under the weather I'll be slower and more careful.

Hope you are feeling better, Robert. There is a lot of energy in this sketch. I, too, like the background.

Re: Weekly OP Sketch Thread Feb 23-March 1

Thanks, Robert, Pat, Sandra, Bill, Herb and Barbara,

Sandra,
Nice self portrait. The colours you have selected to depict the skin are unique. Your OPs set must be so hard. It looks as if colored pencils.

Robert,
Thank you for your compliment. As for your comment related to Sandra's self portrait, using webcam is another style of self port production which gives totally different viewpoint to artists. Interesting.
Your quick flower study is very nice. I like the colours blended for both the flowers and background. Sketching is a tranquilizer to me, too.

RG,
Watercolour as an underpainting for OP? Hope to see your OP covered version on your lovely watercolour paintings. Blurred watercolours may produce interesting picture in harmony with OP strokes.

I have sketched my canvas backpack. Senneliers on a watercolour paper.
