PLANT PARADE, a forum Project: FEBRUARY '09

Welcome to February's Plant Parade project.

I don't know how familiar you are with the work of Henri Rousseau a French painter of the 1844-1910. (Thus spanning Impressionism and later movements).

The Tate Modern has this page
about him and also some of his works, from an Exhibition there in 2005..

Wikipedia has this to say about him.
Clicking on a painting sometimes leads to an even higher resolution, such as here.

Web Museum, Paris, .. Rousseau.

You'll have noticed immediately how stylised his paintings are and I hope you also see some of the humour!
He didn't visit exotic lands to live in jungles yet he was fascinated by jungles and exotic plants and wild creatures.

For this month's project, I'd like you to take plant images and try to find the essential structure and pattern of the plant - stylise/simplify/create pattern.
When you've got forms you're happy with, combine them in a composition, just as Rousseau did!!!

You don't have to create jungle scenes, or even large scale works, just combine some stylised forms to make a pleasing overall design/picture.
Essentially, those who work in media such as fabric collage already do this - or if you did a paper collage, the material would make you think in these terms.

Bamboo by artistGary.

Some ferns by Rosic

Venus Fly-trap by TeAnne

For a huge selection of flowers, please use Macdragon's Spring and Summer flower threads - plenty of choice!

Summer flowers.

As usual, any medium is acceptable and you have until 25th of this month.
On or after that date, please upload your work to this thread, with a little information on medium, support and refs. used.

Please try your hardest to convey an influence of Rousseau's style!

Most important though, is to enjoy the project and have fun!

Interesting challenge this month Maureen.

I'll really have to get my thinking cap on for this. This should be fun to do.
Good excuse for mixed media, maybe.

Every month I plan on participating in this project and every month my procrastination wins out. This has got to stop! I intend to start working on this in the next couple of days as soon as I figure out what I am going to do.

I started mine yesterday first doing a watercolor of a plant and one whimsical creature, and think it would be too cool to add collage, then post both versions.

Oooooo! This one looks like fun! I painted a whole bathroom in this style, back in the 70's.

I enjoyed last month's project so much, I am really keen to have a go at this. Hope to get some painting time soon and I will see what I can come up with. I am so pleased you have these projects as they really kick start me into painting.
