rework of an old work, a bit better

This is my second large multimedia work. The first version was very dark and I just could not embrace it. Like this one a little better. I propped some old rusty tools up against it and am thinking of either attaching them or doing an image transfer. Any thoughts welcome. About 22 x 22 on masonite board, put stuff on sanded stuff off etc etc.

Re: rework of an old work, a bit better

Hi PP
I've been back to look at this several times now and I don't know whether you actually need to include those old tools - I think it depends on what direction you want to take. I really like the softness and the glimmers of light that you have going on here, and think you could carry on defining the depths and reaching for the lights and that alone would make this a good painting, on the other hand if you add the tools then there will be a question of balance that you'll need to address

This may be a little bit of male bias, but I like the use of the tools. One of the benefits of using them like you have is that they give some weight to the bottom of your piece. (literally and figuratively) They also increase the range of values.

I like that you've got them touching the bottom edge. There they help to balance the rectangular shapes that hit the top and right edges.

Cheers!

I like the piece as is. The color of the tools go well with the painting so if you decide to add them they will probably work with the piece.

Hi Barbara,

You've got some nice color and texture going on here.... not sure if the tools would really add to the piece but if you do use them perhaps a less rigid arrangement would work better.

Did you guys take that Sierra trip you talked about a couple of weeks ago?

Jim

I very much like this 'as is' too. You could, if you wanted to balance somewhat more, add a horizontal 3d bar somewhere near the top third of the picture. This looks as though there is a supportive frame around the edges which would be a real bonus - just wondering if perhaps it is 'digitally framed' for presentation here only. Really works, imo.

yea, digitally framed but I found edging at Home Depo hardware that has a copper sheen on a plastic edging, show ya when it is finished. This piece is cooking on the back burner a while. (just sitting there). LOL

yea I'll post a pic in the chat forum! I'm working up my year end photo calendar as we speak. You have enough work you could produce one as well.
