Portrait commission step by step

I thought I would quickly show how I normally approach a commission where I have to travel. This time London. I took lots of photos ,change of clothes in different settings in Bella's house. Then when I decided with the parents suitable options with the digital camera, I painted a study from life. It took about 2 hours , I use this to find my colours and edges , and also to study her as she relaxes and gets to know me.I talk half the time to her so she reacts.

Back in my studio after deciding the layout and how to approach it .I have included stages after each hour. Using my photos and study.

Simply beautiful, the flow of the comp on the diagonal is esp nice played off against her serene expression. I'd have liked to be a little fly on the wall as you built up the skin tones:-)

Re: Portrait commission step by step

Aldo,
Thanks so much for posting this as a WIP and also discussing your process and showing the life sketch. I look forward to seeing more WIP of this portrait.

Could you share with us what paint palette you are using for the skin? (and possibly for the rest of the painting)

Thanks!

Re: Portrait commission step by step

The portrait is 20 x 16.

She has a pale complexion , I used Tit. White , Yellow Ochre , Terra Rosa ,
Ultramarine Blue with a little Viridian in just a few places.

I have attached a couple more WIP's after hour 6 and 7. Unfortunately
8 and 9 are of poor quality. I will retake some more tomorrow when I hope to finish it . I have finished the face now ( I think )!
