January Printmaking Challenge

Alright, printmakers! Get your brushes & rollers, presses & barens, gouges & gravers ready!

For our inaugural printmaking challenge of 2009, you may use whatever printmaking technique that you like, in any dimensions. Select from one of the following photographs downloaded from the RIL as your reference. You may do whatever you want based on these images (i.e. you can rearrange the composition, you can crop, you can invert colours or make it monochrome, etc.). You may do more than one work based on any one of these images, and of course, work on as many of these images as you wish!

Please only use this thread to upload your work or to discuss the works of others referencing this challenge only. If you're doing your own stuff for this month, please create a new thread for discussion; we definitely want to see, just in a different thread! Feel free to upload "work in progress" posts as well as finished challenge posts.

When you upload your work, please post a reply to this thread that includes:

Reference to the WC member who took the photo (their name will be listed below the photo)
Printmaking technique(s) used
Ink(s) used
Support(s) used
Dimensions of work
Any thoughts & comments

and, of course

An image of the work you created!!

Here are the images to choose from:

by devymarie

by Hayward

by Carlanna

by geckonia

and just because I reckoned we needed something abstracted for a particular challenge:

by hifijohn

NB about using RIL photos for work from here:

Quote:
1. It’s generally considered good etiquette to let the artist who posted the photo know that you are using the photo to create art.
2. You can sell the art you create from the photo, and you hold the copyright to that art you create. However, the original photographer maintains the copyright to the photo itself.

Thanks!!
Amie

(BTW - I tried to come up with a range of things so that you could find something you might be interested in trying. Any suggestions, requests or recommendations for next month, please post them in this thread here.)

Great choices, Amie! hard to choose.....I like them all, but the flowers are crying out for a reduction cut of some kind, maybe something will develop...

Thanks for the sticky, Andrew!

I agree that the tulips cry out for a reduction; I hope someone manages that at some point! I haven't yet decided which I want to work on, either!

Yup - did kind of have you in mind when I picked it (although I thought it would be enticing for someone else, too, potentially)

Re: January Printmaking Challenge

Looks like our challenge is off to a good start, with you two, Bill and Debbie! both look interesting, it will be fun to see everyone's interpretations of the same image. I am still thinking....seems to take me ages to work multiple prints out before I want to start cutting.

Re: January Printmaking Challenge

Okay, here's step 2 and 3. Step two is the block with the white lines cut. Step 3 is a GIMP color test version of the final image. C&C regarding colors only would be appreciated. And yes, I'll be able to shade the regions just like you can in a Japanese print.

Re: January Printmaking Challenge

I'm very fond of the orange border; that's a nice contrast to the greens of the image.

What does it look like with the values of the background reversed (i.e. the frog on the darkest value and surrounded by lighter)? I don't mean you have to do that, I'm just curious.
