Re: Art storage rack for painters- easy to build
Instead of pegs, see if tightened nylon fishing lines will serve the same purpose.

Re: Art storage rack for painters- easy to build
Wonderful, innovative and relatively easy to do. Betcha a handsaw would do almost as well as a skill saw and a coping saw could handled the corner cut outs and 1/4" dowels. (Just thinking in terms of tools I already have.) Now, if I could only remember where I saw these shelves advertsied on sale a week or so ago, but they are available most anywhere.
Got a rolling 4 drawer cart at KMart last year and it holds a wealth of supplies and only cost about $20. My GD can set up her easel on top and paint there, or I use it to hold paints or pastels in process of painting. Had to remove the wheels which finally gave way to perhaps too much weight, but will put those soft stick on pads for furniture in their place.
Give an artist a problem, and they will eventually find a simple brilliant solution. Thanks for yours,
Paula

It is not a do it yourself project but It is clearly the ultimate in painting racks.

I prefer the home made one.

I did try using nylon strings at first, but they tended to sag when the painting is leaned against it. The shelves on this type of rack will come loose if you pull up too much with the string, so you can't get the lines too tight. The fishing line would work better with fixed shelves or a wood frame. It's certainly worth trying though, good luck.

Re: Art storage rack for painters- easy to build
I just found this post and I'm definitely going to give this a try. I already have the shelf and some peg board in the garage...all I need is the dowels! Frickin AWESOME idea! Now I don't have to lean them against the shelf on the floor until they dry!
Heck, I might hang a bucket from the ceiling too!!!!!

This looks like something that even I, with no talent for building anything, could do. Never would have thought of dowels through the pegboard. Thanks!

Re: Art storage rack for painters- easy to build
This is really a great idea... I have a "Rolling Studio" that I use to roll around my studio and I think this would be a great addition to that piece... They will be made out of the same kind of shelves.
This is my "Rolling Studio"
The other side...
You see why they would go well together now !
I don't know if you put wheels on yours but I think I will so I can roll it around with the other piece. Roll them out and roll them back when I want to get them out of the way... You have a winner of an idea... thanks.

I like your roll around studio, how very organized and neat you are! How do the drawers attach to the shelves?

I used drawer sliders... I think they are really used on the sides of a drawer in a dresser, but I put them on the bottom and made them stay with zip ties... if I ever want to take them off, all I have to do is cut the tie. I got the sliders from Home Depot and the wire drawers too. (one is a little bit deeper than the other so I can put taller things in it... like a gallon milk carton of water.

Re: Art storage rack for painters- easy to build
This is great. Some of the art catalogs offer a similar (steel) piece of furniture... at the mindboggling price of $500 or more.

Re: Art storage rack for painters- easy to build
That art catalog price is indeed high.
IKEA the knock-down furniture chain store sells at much cheaper price the wire trolley tray stack on wheels like the one in the photo. Then you can add your own attachment board at one or both ends.

Re: Art storage rack for painters- easy to build
I figure that the whole thing cost me about $150. at the most. Not counting the canvas brush holder ... my daughter made me that for my birthday... she is an industrial sewer... one of my favorite gifts.
