PLANT PARADE: November '08, a forum Project

Create a mug design from your floral art.

Soon its Christmas time so I thought it would be fun to create a floral mug design that we could use as a Christmas gift.

There are two ways to get your design on a mug; you can paint directly on the mug with porcelain paint, or you can make a painting in your usually medium, and then scan the motive, and upload it to one of the many places on the internet where you can create your own photo mug.

If you would like to paint directly on a mug you can try the new Pebeo Porcelaine 150 Markers.
These medium-sized, round tip markers offer an innovative way to decorate china, ceramic, porcelain and other slick surfaces. Perfect for writing, drawing, outlining and highlighting, they can be used alone or in conjunction with Porcelaine 150 paints. Either way, the stunning results are sure to please. Once baked, the creation is permanent, microwave and dishwasher safe and solvent resistant.

You can also try the Pebeo Porcelaine 150.
These water-based color glazes can be applied to any heat-stable surface such as: porcelain, crockery, terra-cotta, copper, metal, ceramic and glass. They can be blended with each other to achieve myriad effects and will fire in the oven. pebeo, porcelaine 150,paints

You will need to work from a mug template, so that you know how large your motive should be and where you would like to place it on the mug. I have created a template that will fit the most common mugs, but if you are going to create a photo mug you can down load a template from the sites that offers prints on mugs.

There are many ways to design your mug, you can add text or borders, or you can create patterns from you original art.

I have a few ideas for you to work from, if you would like to design patterns.
You can work on paper or scan the motive and use Photo Shop or another paint program for your design.

This shows some very simple designs from a single flower shape.

You can create all sorts of patterns if you start with some simple lines on paper.

I hope you will enjoy this project!
Our 'reveal' date is 25th of the month - please don't upload before then!
Please upload your work to this thread on the 25th, or as soon after as possible!

Happy painting!
Marianne

I like to paint on ceramic and glass. I think the dollar store has blank white mugs. Maybe I can find one and try it. I am not very good, but I sure would try! I have painted on glass vases and I am giving them for Christmas. This might be fun!

Thanks, Marianne!

Re: PLANT PARADE: November '08, a forum Project

This is my mug project. I started another one using the Pebeo pens, but my daughter has my digital camera, so I will upload photos when I get it back, hopefully tomorrow. I don't think it will be a very good looking mug I create with the pens it does take some practice.

The mug I have uploaded here is done from a water color featuring apples. I wanted it to look like you can walk into the painting on road with giant apples, and I think it look kind of fun on the mug. I uploaded a jpg file to Zazzel.com to see what it would look like, and then I saved the images that Zazzel generates to my pc.

I can't wait to see if any of you will come up with a design!

Re: PLANT PARADE: November '08, a forum Project

That's really super Marianne! Love the gothic feel of the design too.
... and a real mug too!

I don't have the pebeo markers/paints, but do have a catalogue for Jackson's, which now supplies them, so I may order some in the new year.

Meanwhile - I've been busy elsewhere so I've played around on the comp and gone geometric!

Here's my daisy design - hope to play a bit more before the end of the month!

Thank you Marianne. I used an old programme - had it about 10 years, so it will have been upgraded many times since .... it's Serif DrawPlus 4 - very basic compared with those available now!

Hi Marianne & Maureen,

It seems it is just us chickens here.

I clean forgot today is the 25th and then I was extremely busy and interupted. AND I have been doing homework in Acrylics So here are my designs, thanks for suggesting it Marianne I may even buy some mugs from that site you mentioned.

I designed all of it myself except for the Blue Delft I copied some design to create my own.

Hi Marianne & Maureen and Angwhar.
I'm late, sorry, I forgot yesterday was the 25th. and I had something ready to post here too.
Your designs are all wonderful, and look so good and professional on those mugs. How did you do that?? I've never heard of a program to do that before. and Marianne, yours is on a real mug wow it looks excellent. great work.
Well, I played around with my computer the other night and came up with a semi abstract flower mosaic. I only used Dots to make it...Had a lot of fun.
So put it best as I can on that Mug layout you posted for us Marianne, but didn't know how to do the rest.. so here it is...............
