My New Baby and a Painting

The weather is so gorgeous today. This tree along the lakeshore outside my studio turns bright crimson in fall. I packed up my new baby and went out for some sunshine and fall color.

My Favorite Tree
6x8", oils on sealed, primed hardboard

Here is the new baby and the work in progress! I know, I know.....the "baby" is not what you thought it would be, right?

Sorry there's so much contrast on that image. In case you can't tell, it's a 6x8" Guerrilla pochade box. This is the "thumb box" model, which I bought as a watercolor setup (though I'm using this one for oils), so it comes with that covered palette and a palette extension. Next time I'm out painting with it, I'll take some better pics. I like my ultra-light foamcore boxes for when I need something very lightweight, but this thumbox holds everything I need, is so well made and ultra-convenient.

Yes, VA, it's a boy! I forgot to say that he sleeps through the night and never complains! hehehe...

I also forgot to say that I used a greatly expanded palette for this. 'Had to make use of all the extra palette slots. hahaha...

Cad Yellow Lemon
Cad Yellow Medium
Cad Orange
Raw Sienna
Cad Red
Permanent Rose
Permanent Alizarin
Transparent Red Oxide
Cerulean Blue
Cobalt Blue
Ultramarine Blue Deep
Ivory Black
Titanium White

My challenge to myself was to use every color and still make a harmonized painting. Did I succeed? I used quite a bit of everything except the black. I think I'm going to keep this expanded palette for awhile. I'm finding it easier to mix clean color.

And you won't have to change any diapers, unless you are like me and use old diapers as painting rags!
Very nice painting - great color harmony and distance.

Nice painting Jamie and what a pretty baby! Must have been a tough labour though!

Claire, yes, I do use rags and keep a supply in the box. LOL

Michael, it was the easiest labor I ever had. Heck, the box wasn't even conceived until last weekend, and by Thursday it had arrived (seemingly by stork) and was swaddled on my doorstep when I got home!
