OCTOBER 2008 Challenge - Red Admiral

A change from architecture this month. A scene which will look good on anyone's wall, especially in a large size.

This is a beautiful Red Admiral butterfly on Verbena Bonariensis. It's a regular summer visitor to England from the Continent. I photographed it in the beautiful gardens at Newby Hall in Yorkshire last year. It is a good exercise in bringing the subject forward by painting a blurred background.

I take lots of photographs and eventually they become paintings

Doug

Doug, I'm going to give this a try. I'm going to ask for help on doing the blurred background ~ this has always been difficult for me. Do I just print this off the thread or is there another link to this photo?

I love this photo.

I would mask out the in focus foreground (add the stem of the flower the butterly is on) and paint the background first wet in wet.

Doug,
Love this picture! Can't wait to try it! I'm glad you posted a tip on doing the background. I was wondering about that. I am hesitant to use masking fluid since I am allergic to latex. Any other ideas what to use?

Reggie

Re: OCTOBER 2008 Challenge - Red Admiral

You could sketch out the butterfly on frisket film and cut it out to use as a mask. If you can't get film, you can do a jury rig with magic tape and a scalpel around the edge of the areas you want to protect.

This looks like a fun one to try--I've never done a challenge before! I'll give it a shot...see what happens...

Re: OCTOBER 2008 Challenge - Red Admiral

I decided to straighten the bent antenna and leave out the flower peeping from behind the top wing.

Doug I did the same thing with the antenna, what kind of flower is that - do you know? It looks like Lantanna to me.
