Re: General Sketchbook - Part 6

Michael, that is very bold and dramatic. Sounds like the ones Derwent or Cretacolor put in their sketching kits, they're like Conte but fatter and not with the same texture. Bold powerful sketching there, and so expressive!

Sam, your eyes page is impressive. So many different expressions and angles, all rendered well in different mediums and ways.

I've got two sketches for current soft pastel WIPs, vine charcoal and white charcoal pencil on green Pastelbord and vine charcoal on Colourfix. I color corrected so the surfaces would be their right colors.

Re: General Sketchbook - Part 6

wow Sam great eyes. I should practice different angles too. For some reason I do ok when I am just doing a straight forward eye.. but then when I try doing a person straight on view the eyes always look off. Guess I should do pages of them

Re: General Sketchbook - Part 6

Yesterday's sketch and today's first sketch.

First, I started my third major pastels project -- the most delayed, most procrastinated one of the lot. It's a commission without deadline or deposit, and my poor buyer has had to wait for a year just to see anything on paper. I did some preliminary sketches for it earlier. But here is the real sketch on the Colourfix that will be turned into her painting. 9 x 12" dark blue Colourfix with a sketch in General's white charcoal pencil mostly showing where the highlights will go:

When I finish Cheetahs Fire Dancing, a dream scene, I'll post it here for comparison. So this like the last ones is an undersketch.

Now for one that's finished, an ACEO (Art Cards Editions and Originals) on white vellum bristol with my new Derwent Tinted Charcoal Pencils that just arrived today. I love these! The muted soft nature colors are great, and they go so fast and blend so well for sketching! Most of the white is reserved except the highlights I strengthened on the rock's light side with the white pencil.

With a daily art challenge on my blog community for October, I should be posting a lot to this thread!

Jerry, those are great. You're so good at people and places that people built, all the difficult manmade things like machines you handle so masterfully.

Re: General Sketchbook - Part 6

Michael...terrific sketch to start off this thread, and a good follow up too.

EP...I like your series on the WDE photo refs.

Maria....Brrr!! I can feel the cold winter air. Your sketch is beautifully drawn. I wish you had posted it larger.

Robert...Lovely sketches. I love the texture and shading in all of them.

Jenny...I can't comment on the likeness, but your technique is excellent and the portrait itself is superb. Did you say that took you only 20 minutes?!!

Sam...nice eyes. I am impressed with your meticulous approach and application.

Jerry...wonderful sketches!!! Buildings, people, machines, street furniture - you have captured all of them extremely well.

I am posting a quick sketch that I did last night of a subject that I intend to return to sometime later. This was done on a newspaper with an ordinary fine point writing pen.

Blah

Re: General Sketchbook - Part 6

Just started a blog on cool sketch places so thought I'd post it here. It's mostly on spots in Southern California but will include other places I hit outside of that area. Check it here: http://linearfieldguide.blogspot.com/
I'll be updating it a lot.

Re: General Sketchbook - Part 6

hi,
I just checked out the blog, very nice work. I hope you keep sketching. I am trying to develop a sketch book habit, I usually have one with me when I will be waiting somewhere, (doctor's ofc. etc.) thanks for the link to your blog. I will check back from time to time.
Trish

Re: General Sketchbook - Part 6

powen49- Thanks. I'll always keep sketching (it's my job ). The key (as you said) is to make sketching a habit. Do it all the time and you'll see a huge improvement in your skills. I can't be without my sketch bag or it freaks me out. I've updated with a post about Lake Arrowhead.
