Different Styles - Different Signature?

Is it acceptable and would it be wise (or not) to sign work differently based on the style (or smaller size)?

I normally work very detailed, almost photo-realistic but also very time intensive. I sign these First Initial and surname on the front, full name on the back.

The project work involves smaller less expensive experimental pieces, more painterly, expressive, less detail, far less time intensive. I was considering signing these on the front with my initials only and full name on the back, like I have done for ACEO's and art cards (my name is too long for smaller art).

Does anyone else do anything similar?

I signed my aceos with initials, also, for the same reason. I hate to sign on the front of anything because I feel it detracts. I noticed at some art shows I've been to recently that a bunch of the younger painters aren't signing in the front of even huge ones. Food for thought for me, at least.

Re: Different Styles - Different Signature?

I definitely agree that some signatures can detract from the work, but in general I do prefer to see artwork signed legibly, as it often (but obviously not always) indicates a hand painted/drawn piece compared to computer or digital created.

I think a clear name or simple identifier of some sort on the front is important, both for marketing and copyright ownership identification.

You might want to have a 'shorthand' kind of signature for those things that are what you consider 'minor' pieces... practice with some kind of squiggle which is artistic but small and consistent. Then you could have two signatures... the one you currently use and your 'shorthand' one.

I don't see why not, or like Diane mentioned the initials or a shorter version on the front, and the usual signature on the back.

I never sign the front of my work for above reasons. I don't see any reason you would not want to do what you propose.
