Glory Days (DEMO)
Hi Everybody!
Well, I can’t wait for autumn! How about you?
This is today’s painting. I took photos along the way so I thought you may enjoy a quick demo. It is 18" x 24" on Ampersand Pastelbord.
1. As Deborah Secor does, I toned my board with an orangey peach color. Just a bunch of horizontal strokes.
2. I used a wide foam brush and scrubbed it in really well to cover the whole board.
3. Preliminary sketch with vine charcoal.
4. Sky – a combination of lavender, bright peach, a muted orangey peach, a soft yellow, and a darker peach.
5. Sky and pastels close-up.
6. Farthest mountain is done in the same colors as the sky, and the 2nd mountain range is done with the same colors, but a deep burgundy is added to make it darker then the farthest mountain. I also used a color shaper to give it a bit of texture.
7. Sorry about this photo! I added a 3rd mountain range and started defining the trees with a very dark green and some deep burnt oranges and dark browns. Also added some lighter colored ground around the trees.
8. More defining the trees and oranges and a bit more land color.
9. Started laying in the follow of the closer fields with a burnt yellows.
10. Before I put the oranges in the trees on the right, I used water and scrubbed in the dark green that was already there. I didn’t want to add more pastel because it would have filled up the tooth of the board before the oranges went in.
11. More ground color, more defining of trees… sorry, but at this point I was so “in the groove” I forgot to take more photos until it was done…
12. The final painting (forgot to sign it). For the trees on the right, I used the vine charcoal to feather the edged of the upper trees and also used the lavender and peach to feather the edges also.
It looks a bit darker on the screne and it has a lot more detail than what you can actually see.
If you have any questions, please let me know. I hope you enjoyed the journey!!
Paula
