Cat painting Demo by Rose Baggs

Hello y’all. I've promised to do a Demo for some of you at WC. It's finally here...Sorry for taking so long to deliver it. Even though I took a bunch of pictures I've manage to get caught up in the moment and forgot to snap some shots that I think would be useful...but I will keep trying on doing Demos and making up for the things you missed this time around.
Notice...this is a demo of my way of doing a painting...please feel free to ask question and always remember that there is a bunch of ways to start and develop a painting...nothing is carved in stone. Hope you enjoy. Meet Timlet, that once was a stray cat. Timlet found a nice home with a lovely Lady and much deserved love...and now even got his portrait done. Sweet!!!
Pastels on gray Velour paper, 12"x17

Photo 1: Line drawing – velour is a very sensitive paper it’s advised not to use pressure when drawing on it or you will have an indentation on the paper…hard to cover later on.

Photo 2: Contour of the eyes with black pencil
Black stick was used for the pupil

Photo 3: contour of other areas/nose (it’s important to reinforce your preliminary drawing so you don’t loose the lines)

Photo 4: more contours with dark gray/black

Photo 5: covering more with dark gray/black…

Photo 6: Under painting with dark gray and black nupastel

To be continued...

Re: Cat painting Demo by Rose Baggs

Second sitting:
I’ve started to lay in some color on it.

Photo 7: Nose: Brown, yellow ochre and Flesh tone.
Eyes: Light Phthalo blue

Photo 8: Darkening the eyes with a darker version of phthalo blue.

Photo 9: greens added to give dimension to the eyes.

Under Painting:
Photo 10: More under painting on the body with dark gray and deep yellow ochre.

Photo 11: I’ve used Brown pencil to emphasize some of the lines on the hand…very lightly. You don’t want to use pressure when contouring…or you will have a cartoon like painting.

Photo 12: Hand Under Painting

Soft sticks were used. Mauve and yellow ochre

Sorry for forgetting to photograph some of the steps. Got caught in the “Zen”

Re: Cat painting Demo by Rose Baggs

Photo 13: Colors used for the hand:
Pink madder, pale magenta, Van dyck brown, light blue, sanguine, cadmium orange and cadmium red…maybe a little more than that…but that should be more than plenty…Lol

3rd sitting:
Photo 14: More work on the hand. You’ve got to keep adjusting colors and values.

Photo 15: The background colors influences the colors and values of your work. So before going any further do the background first.

4th sitting:
Photo 16: I’ve worked on the sleeve of the blouse – dark gray/black and used burnt carmine and cadmium red.

5th sitting:
Photo 17: Worked on the Blanket (left) – Used same colors as the background.

Photo 18: Added lighter reds on blanket

Photo 19: Keep working on the blanket... notice that I used a little green underpainting on the brighter piece of the blanket. It was done on purpose to make it pop up.

Photo 20: Finishing touches on Blanket

Photo 21: Started adding light colors to the fur on the Belly – Light gray, light yellow ocher and white.

Photo 22: Worked a little bit more on the belly

Photo 23: I’ve started working on the whole figure with light colors following the direction of the fur. Going back and fourth with lights and darks adjusting values

Photo 24: Almost finished – I’ve refined some of the details.

I've tried to photograph the piece with a better lighting...the colors aren't completely accurate but it is pretty close.

Close up

Hope you enjoy it. Please feel free to ask question and C&C are welcome!

Re: Cat painting Demo by Rose Baggs

Thanks Rose, beautiful painting, beautiful demo, and the reds are glorious, probably better in real life
wish I worked in such and orderly manner, but tho I try, it just goes on in it's own way...I also love that you've used a non typical pose and left the eye "imperfect" just like it would be, it adds so much.
