Re: August 2008 Class: Painting Chrome Homework
Tim,
I've picked the motorcycle reference you have in your WIP Tutorial thread to try. I'm finishing up the August Challenge and then I'll get started on this Class. Looks like it is going to be fun.

I think I'll use your techniques to paint a Brass instrument Tim. Thanks for doing this.

Re: August 2008 Class: Painting Chrome HOMEWORK THREAD
I decided to give the Motorcycle Reference Photo a try.
I traced it onto my 300 lb. Saunders Waterford paper and then drew over the lines with my pencil. Sure hope I can make heads or tails out of this when Tim leads the way. This is 6.75" x 10.5". It will be my first time using 300 lb. paper and this company as wellgot it in a sample pack from Cheap Joe's. Sylvia

Sylvia:
That's a great drawing as you've put in enough information to capture the reflection. You'll get dazzling results with those long lines of light and dark.

Wow! That will be a great composition Doug. The whites and blacks are real obvious which will give great contrast. There are also some interesting shades of gold as well.
Can't wait to see how it come along.

Yes, I'm looking forward to trying it Tim. I spotted the Tuba player taking a break last year when visiting a local historic home and took the photo with a painting in mind.

Re: August 2008 Class: Painting Chrome HOMEWORK THREAD
Tim,
Thanks for the tip about blowing the reference photo up on my desktop. It helped me see some of the hidden details that were in the darker parts of the photo.
I just read your latest addition to the WIP. It is really looking good. Hope I can translate some of the ideas to my painting. I've copied down your formulas for the different parts of the reflective surface.

Re: August 2008 Class: Painting Chrome HOMEWORK THREAD
Complicated sketch Sylvia.
I traced the main outline, decided to mask out the principal whites then put an overall pale yellow was on my tuba. The rest I'm doing freehand. It's very tedious but it's looking better than I thought it would. As you say Tim it's the darks that make it shine.
I'm putting it all on a grassy lawn background.
Sorry about the photo.
Doug

That looks really nice! I like how you have added those touches of green to the horn. The dark colors really make the painting pop!

Sylvia:
I don't know how many times I've seen something new in a reference photo I used as my computer background screen. The resolution on the computer seems to be better than anything I can print. I remember once getting ready to paint a reflection on a car bumper and realized that the blob of tan and blue was me taking the picture!
