Portrait- Inktense experiment! MI Later

Ay yi yi- did I have soooooo much trouble with this one!

First, a 3/4 view is always challenging, Second- she is a beautiful woman, and at some points in my drawing she was NOT beautiful, Third- I was battling the medium the whole way, which was the new Inktense pencil in black.

About the medium.... I think these Inktense pencils could be very cool for certain things, but IMO were not well suited for portraiture, and I will tell you why. When you add water to the drawing, the black that was created was very intense (duh- like the name I guess!!) and it dried quickly and was very hard to soften. I haven't read much about these, but I think that you can only dissolve them one time- after that, they are waterproof.

Perhaps when I have done 20 portraits in this medium (which will probably not happen!), I could get a better handle on that, but there was too much lack of control in the lights and darks to tackle a portrait, in my opinion.

What I found myself doing was drawing a lot of dry Inktense, as well as another black colored pencil (Polychromos) over the original Inktense (which had been wetted and then dried) to help even out tones and blend. I do like a looser style, but I think the good old WC pencils will still be my choice for a dry-to-wet drawing of a person. More options and control...

After, I also bumped up some of the highlights with a white pastel stick.

I think that is about it.

i like certain things about the drawing, but know that I didn't capture her likeness exactly. I elongated her face in my drawing by accident, made her eyes a little too large, and didn't get the nose and mouth quite right BUT, I do still like the spirit of the work, and was happy to give a new toy- the Intense pencil- a test drive. My attitude with portraits is- If you can't get the exact likeness, try not to overwork it and make the drawing "sing" with linework and values. On that note, I did my best, and that is all I can expect, so I am happy.

I will be using Inktense again, but think it is better suited for landscapes and still life subjects, personally.

Enough banter- Here is the portrait! I will mark this a s MI, because I would like to try something else and add it to the thread. The weekend is still young. Hurrah!!

Lori,
This is a very very beautiful portrait even if it didn'tcome out the way you wanted. And, it looks like her. Her eyes are very beautiful and love what you did with her neck and the hat.

You did make it sing Lori!
It looks like charcoal. I like the expressive eyes, and the mouth.

I think you've captured her very successfully. It may not have been what you envisioned but it is a good likeness.

The Inktense pencils are challenging because they change so much when water is added. I've had fairly good results doing florals with them but since I'm not all that good at doing humans anyway, I doubt I'll even attempt a portrait.

Looks good to me. Love the depth of the eyes and the form of the mouth.
I'd say whatever your problems with the pencil, you overcame them successfully and that is the goal.

hey, Missy... nope.. dont see the problem... scrolling down, i loved the hat and eyes, definition of the nose, then the mouth, got the pose; then the chin and neck and the looseness of the blouse... what the heck?? that's a good defence for Inkintense... or whatever it's callled... in YOUR hand, it worked!!! i think she'd be pleased..... yr Nonnykor

Re: Portrait- Inktense experiment! MI Later

Hi all,
I just wanted to make a comment on the Inktense pencils. They just became available at our local art supply store, so of course I rushed right over to get a few to try them out.
I like working in pen & ink with watercolour pencils when I'm sketching so I thought this might be a great addition.
I purchased three earth tones to try and was so disappointed. I also took them over to the art club for my friends to try them out (I also brought along the little pamphlet that comes with them.
We all agreed that they were really just watercolour pencils that didn't seem to disolve the original line when water was added.
Glad I only bought 3.... they were 1.69/ea plus tax
Cheers
Sharon

Thanks for your notes regarding using Inktense for portraits. I like the result and don't see evidence of your "behind the scenes" struggles.

The finished piece is lovely. I love how the darkness behind her helps define her so well, even though the hat and her clothing is so simple.
It is beautiful, don't stress the likeness.

Sharon,
I do like the dark darks that the Inktense pencils provided, but they definitely were a struggle with the portrait. I won't be giving up my watercolor pencils- that's for sure!!

Thanks for the details on Inktense pencils. I was tempted to get them but I still have so much watercolor pencils to go through and the thought of not being able to lift the color with water later again is challenging.

Your portrait looks very good and I especially like the eyes and the nose in particular.
