Squirrel on Scratchboard

Hi,
I thought I would try another scratchboard this time with the intent to try a few new tricks and add some colour to it. Here is the start of it. I carefully sketched it out with pencil then started to scratch away the basic shape of the squirrel. I roughly scratched out the background hightlight between his fore legs and then tried some fine 400 grit wet/dry sandpaper for the background. I read about this trick. My intent was to try to get a fuzzy background similar to an out of focus camera effect. Disaster! I found out that the scratchboard isn't completely flat and the sandpaper only scuffed the high spots resulting in a blotchy effect. I will correct this with some paint and continue from there. Comments and critiques are of course welcome.

Like the pose - can't really comment on the sandpaper area - maybe if you showed us a close up? Looking forward to seeing this as it progresses.

Re: Squirrel on Scratchboard

Hi,
ok I pulled out my handy dandy airbrush and repaired the damaged area by spraying some thin white over it and built up some of the detail in the background. I then used a skin colour to quickly tint in the majority of the bg and added some definition with a dark green and a touch of black. I might go in later and tweak the colours further if its required. I started scratching in the squirrel a bit more and here's the next step.

Les, interesting idea, makes your squirrel look like it's going to jump right off of the board. I'm anxious to see this finished.

Les, this is great. I love the depth of field that you've created with the airbrushed background and the squirrel looks so right in your face. I'm anxious to see more. Nothing beats the airbrush for that out of focus look.

Re: Squirrel on Scratchboard

Thanks Patrick, L'taniea and Harold. I spent some more time on him tonight but this is where I am going to stop for now, (wife is home from bingo). I have started defining his foot and added more detail to his face and the start of some of his bushy tail. I am going to go in and add a blue grey colour to him soon and then scratch out some highlights. I am glad that its attracting so much interest.

Re: Squirrel on Scratchboard

This is soooo good. I'm still chuckling here. I showed to my older dog that's a hunter and has attempted to chase squirrels before...he's still looking for it.

Re: Squirrel on Scratchboard

Les, he's coming out beautifully, the background really makes him pop right at you. Your delicate scratching is really affective on the squirrel's fur, this is great fun to watch develop...can't wait to see more.

Re: Squirrel on Scratchboard

Oh my god, this is amazing - using an airbrush for the background, keeping it blurred and contrasting that with the detail of scratchboard! Amazing.

Detail shots? Just one showing an area with both scratching and air brush? pretty please...
