Plein air from yesterday

Hey Everyone!
Here is another plein air that I did yesterday. Any comments and critiques are most appreciated. It sure can be difficult to know what not to paint, what to change, etc. Thanks!
Tracey

Hi Tracey!

First of all - WoW! I'd say your intuition on what to paint was perfect! I love this!!!

Tracey, this is beautiful! The background is so subtle, and the foreground colors just pop. I think you did a great job of choosing what to leave in and what to leave out. If you'd painted in the house, it would have been too busy. As it is, it's lovely.

Good job editing while still keeping it believable. Beautiful scene. Would you mind sharing how much time you're averaging on a PA?

Thank you Georgi and Linda. Linda, this one is 8"x10" and it took about 1 and a half hours. It would have been shorter, but I was chatting and kept changing stuff.

Re: Plein air from yesterday

ONe thing I suggest is try not to see the leaves in trees...and then figure a technique to imitate them. Don't do that.

See the shape, block it in with no more than three values/color...dark, mid and light...then use the pigment of sky behind to poke around, in-between and thru to suggest or sculpt tree shapes, character. That will feel more solidly like a tree....

If I get some time today, I'll return and share some links to look at...examples. Trees can be quite easy and fun when managed as I describe.

Re: Plein air from yesterday

Larry, I will try that with the trees when I go out tomorrow, if its not raining. I was not sure what to do with this tree (as you can tell). I appreciate and value any help you give me. Thank you!

Nice job! I don't think I would have known what to do with that scene.

Re: Plein air from yesterday

I like it... I think plein air goes well with your style, Tracey! Or maybe it's your style that goes well with plein air?

Either way, this is wonderful... The depth, the light... nicely done...
