Do you mean does it look like an orange segment? The answer is yes. But the actual picture to me is more of a study than a complete work.

I really like this series you are doing. It would be great to see them all posted (or framed) together when you are done. I really am attracted to the simplicity and graphic statement of each of these.

The orange is wonderful....nice light. I like the colors. I agree it is more of a study, but I think that is the intent. It has a nice look.

Mike, I like the texture of this piece, especially the background. I am a little concerned over the shadow tho - I would think there would be a gradation from dark to light out to the edge in that shadow.

Did you do this from life? These quick little studies are going to look great as a grouping.

I did the paintings from photos I took in stark sunlight so there is no gradation effect on the shadow. It is a full silhouette.

Mike, take a look at the shadow in rl, you will find that even in stark overhead sunlight that it lightens the further away from the subject, even if only slightly. The camera can't capture the range of values that the eye can. I like this series you are doing and you are nailing the appearance of orange slices for sure. I can see this series all matted into one frame. It could really be dynamic.

Michael, it is good, but if you want my unvarnished opinion, it is not fabulous. I'd expect there to be a difference between the lit side and the shadow side of the slice. The shadow side wouldn't be so much shadow, as the light would shine through the flesh, so it would be much richer and glowy there. If you'd painted it from life, I guess those things would have been obvious, which they are not in a photo.

But if you ask if this loose and painterly style is any good -- then I say it is fabulous! I like this much better than your usual style, but then again, that is a personal preference. This is more free and vibrant!

Mike, I really like this series, to me it is fresh... Like others here have already said, I think the four of them would make a dynamic impression.. Of course, a matter of personal preference - and to me they are appealing. I love the fresh and clean look...

Thanks everyone. Always good to get a fresh perspective from other eyes.

I am working on one last painting before I say the study is all complete and start on the final painting. The five will all be individually framed and place in order on a wall. I'll take picts when I have them up.

What started out as a study turned out to be a really good series, IMO, in a paintery style.
