Z-Brush or MODO are true digital sculpting programs. Other 3d programs will help to have ontop of that like 3dmax or Maya or equivalent.

I believe Hexagon may be one as well, but less expensive. You can find out about it at www.daz3d.com

Yes Hexagon is probably the least expensive and the best program for the money. Silo is another alternative. Both have steep learning curves unless you are familiar with digital software. So, if you buy, get a good DVD with lots of tuts to help.

I have no experience with zBrush, but if interested I believe they have a Trial or Demo you might try.

In many cases I will go to the Software Web site and look for a Manual or Users Guide on the software then read and compare it to others. Then I go to the Software's Forum and see who has used and has comments about the various difference between the software packages I am interested in aquiring.

I really like Freeform, you can feel the piece as you're working so it's very intuitive. I've used it for years, but it's way pricey.

Visit ZBrush Central... it will blow your mind what is being done there.
I use Hexagon and Zbrush. You will need some brainpower in your computer to get into any heavy duty zbrush work. If you like, take a peek at the digital sculpting section at my site, and some entries elsewhere in the forum under zbrush. Blip tv and Youtube will show plenty of demos of both programs as well as others.
