Re: April 2008 Class HOMEWORK Thread - Let's Get Wet!

Here are the next two, neither really completed, but I think the water and the reflections are better. I was starting to pick at the second one, so I stopped.

Both 7x10.5 on Fabriano Aristico, WN and Daniel Smith Alizarin, Cobalt blue, yellow ochre and burnt sienna on the first, FUB,burnt umber and raw sienna, sap green on the second. This is my first experience with the Aristico paper, very nice for washes and colour lifts well (had an awful time with the clouds in the second one).

I just realized I should have put the reflections from the darker banks into the water here, will work on that in the next one.

Re: April 2008 Class HOMEWORK Thread - Let's Get Wet!

HI! Lynn, this is a great application of the tutorial, perfect for your trip to capture some of the scenery. Your washes show your progression, i've found less water with the artistico works a little better, like the reflections and yes, cloud formations in the last, crisp and clear. It takes a little while to get into the "recording the scene mode", a little different from a detailed finished piece and good practice for laying out a workup.

Hi! Joanne and all, Here's my workup (using a jot) of crashing waves...tried for the sky effects as well.....not too many dark moody pieces in my journals...worth trying. 9x12 journal 140 CP, along the south shore, here. thanks for the inspiration and opportunity to try. Regards, Marianne

Tutorial #6 crashing waves:

Re: April 2008 Class HOMEWORK Thread - Let's Get Wet!

Ona, the best advice I can give you is to practice using your craft knife before you get started on your finished painting. Place washes on to scraps of paper and allow to dry use these to practice on. Make sure your craft knife is sharp and watch those fingers!!!!

Hi Lynn, what a great start you have made, it’s always wise to start at the beginning of the lesson and build your confidence before tackling the larger projects.
1. This exercise is designed to aid your understanding of the reflective qualities of the sky, a mirror image of colour if you like. Keep practicing this exercise until you are confident that the colour above is reflected below.
2. Keeping the washes simple and limited as you have is easier to achieve, you are now getting to grips with this concept
3. Wonderful. Great reflective quality of the sky. Perhaps you could now include the reflections from the areas of land, especially the dark foreground rocks.
4. Love the reflected clouds in the pool of water, very well done.
Perhaps now is a good time for you to go back to stage 2 and practice introducing the reflective qualities of the land into the pools of water? I cover this stage in the tutorial. You say you are having fun and it shows, keep going and good luck.

Hi Marianne, you have been busy. How lucky you are to have such a fantastic scene to paint, the white tipped crest of the waves works so well suggesting the in coming tide. Loving the lighthouse and the red roofed cottage on the cliff edge. Thanks for the close up, we really get to see the crash of the wave as it hits the rocks. Perhaps a darker cloud behind the white of the wave would help to emphasise the white tipped crest even more.

Thanks for looking and commenting, Marianne, and good for you, doing the waves! Lovely sea scene.

Thanks, Joanne, I do feel a bit more confident about tackling this kind of subject now. At least I know where to start, thanks to your clear descriptions. I'll go back and work on the land reflections now.

Re: April 2008 Class HOMEWORK Thread - Let's Get Wet!

Laura - Splattering does make a bit of a mess. When I paint inside I use my kitchen table which is on a light tile floor with white walls behind me. I used to worry about the mess, but I find it stays pretty much on my table and me. (I always get splatters on my clothes.) I just try not to get too wild with it. I would be careful with a rug underneath though.

Connie - Thanks so much.

Lynn - Good job with your sky reflections. Keep going on each of them and add some land reflections too. You're off to a good start.

Marianne - Great job on your crashing wave!! Great job on the rocks and sand too!!!

Lin - That was Marianne's fabulous crashing wave. I can't take credit for it.

I haven't finished my second waterfall. I had lots of company over the weekend that distracted me. LOL

I did this one at a local arboretum. It's cross-posted in the Watercolor Gallery. This was done in a 7 x 10 Arches block.

HI! Joanne and all, Good to get some painting time in! regards, Marianne

Thanks Lynn, it was a fun jot to practice on, I'm still learning as well Happy to see you here.

Lin! I've done that a couple of times myself, the feedback is appreciated none the less! that wax resist works well for me! glad you liked.

Joan, sounds like a busy weekend, your reflecting pond with the blossoming rhodies is so peaceful and so characteristic of the arboretum. You have captured it well. We got over to the hatchery and gristmill at Connetquot State Park, couple of great scenes with the river and back lit trees there, too! Thanks for your feedback.

Joanne, Went back in and darkend the cloud behind the crest and dabbled in a few more of the jetty rocks...gave a more misty feel than just suggesting it with color. Good to try both ways. thanks for the feedback! Here's the redo;

Joan, I wanna come paint plein aire with you! What a lovely spot. Great job too. Thanks for the info about spattering. I have a lot of very old clothes that are covered in house paint and old plaster. Hmmm, maybe I can clean out a corner of the garage this summer!

Maryann, that made a big difference!

Re: April 2008 Class HOMEWORK Thread - Let's Get Wet!

Lin - Thanks. I wish I had a garden like that. It would be lovely to be surrounded by all those plants. I'll have to be happy with my flowerboxes on the patio.

Marianne - Thank you. I haven't been up as far as the hatchery yet. It's on my list of places to go. The dark clous really setsoff the splash nicely!!! Good redo!

Laura - Come join me, but it may be a bit too far for you. lol Splattering is a lot of fun to do outside. Then you don't have to worry too much about the mess, except for your clothes.

Re: April 2008 Class HOMEWORK Thread - Let's Get Wet!

Hi Joan, what a tranquil peaceful scene, the still water and reflections set the mood so well. I just want to go sit on that bench for some quiet contemplation. I also love how the pink blossoms invite me into the scene.

Regarding splattering.... something I love to do, my studio is such a mess due to my flinging the paint around. In fact the whole room is a disgrace!!!! I am such a messy worker!!! Its on my to do list to spruce it up during the summer but every time I go in there I just want to paint so it just gets worse!!! Most of my students know that if they sit close to me when I am painting they are likely to get 'splattered'

Marianne, it was great before but the changes you have made make all the difference, I now see the crest of the wave more clearly. No more work to be done with this one just a frame.

Re: April 2008 Class HOMEWORK Thread - Let's Get Wet!

Joanne - Thanks. The rhododendrons were in bloom around the arboretum. I have to be a bit more restrained with my splattering. My painting area is my kitchen/dining table and the room opens to my living room and kitchen. I don't want abstract splashes on my walls. lol

Re: April 2008 Class HOMEWORK Thread - Let's Get Wet!

This is the second waterfall that I've been working on. I'm pretty happy with it. I like the way the rippled reflection came out. I did some scraping for the splashes along the sides.

A few details:
