Up close and personal: lion

After the Polar Bear background disaster (it can be fixed, it can be fixed she says, rocking back and forth repeatedly) I thought I would cheer myself up by starting a new project:

It's a 24 x 10 inch on Scratchbord, and will be coloured when complete. This is a detail shot of the centre "third" of the board:

C&C welcome.

Crap! I almost forgot to mention the photo credit: This is from morguefile contributor "hotblack" (Scott Liddell) and is used with his permission.

This is a really nice start Tania. I see that with planning to colour it, I assume you have scratched more back than normal. It works well even in black and white so far too.

Re: Up close and personal: lion

L'taniea: Thank you! I wouldn't recommend it - the original ref shows some nice scars on this guy's muzzle, looks like he's been in a fight or two...

Patrick: Thanks. It's kinda odd, I take it to where I think, "That looks good" and then I knock it up another shade, so part of my brain (the part that loves B&W) is screaming at me while I do it, "Stop! You're wrecking it!!" I find a can of Pepsi quiets her down for a while.

Diana: Thank you, very much. I didn't start with the eye (I almost never do) but when I sat down to do it I made sure I was all there before I started. IRL this eye is almost one inch across and I knew it had to be perfect, or as close to it as possible. So I'm really glad you like it

Gorgeous expression you have achieved in the eye already and softness of fur.

OH my...I'm along for the ride...it's looking fantastic already!

Don't worry about the bear...you'll get it the way you want it.

Re: Up close and personal: lion

Karen: Thank you, this one is going a lot more smoothly (maybe I'm just not meant to do backgrounds?)

Mary: Thanks, it was a beautiful ref to work from (thanks Scott!!) it really showed every little detail.

Lorna: Thank you, I really need every encouraging word I can get about that bear.

Well, I was up really late last night and I finished the scratchwork on the lion. My husband said he'd come upstairs to tell me it was time to pack it in (I have a clock up there... somewhere) but I was happily singing along with the radio so he decided to leave me be. I'm glad he did

C&C (no caveats this time ) welcome

Re: Up close and personal: lion

You do realise that this "centre third of the board" would be my whole board (and I'd be finished and on to the next one )

Brilliant!!

Tania, I don't really know what to say except that I think you have really stepped up your work to another level recently. It's always been such excellent work but lately it seems to be truly masterful.

Tania,

WOW! those eyes - simply beautiful. And his coat, too. OK, everything is beautiful. I'll be waiting for the colored version. It will probably be breathtaking.

Re: Up close and personal: lion

Tania, he is absolutely beautiful...I love the contrasts...and you just find yourself drawn in by his eyes! BTW you did an awesome job with the polar bear...I would never have had the courage to tackle a background...you should really pat yourself on the back for that. The ice places him in his environment and adds dimension to the piece. I think it's wonderful.
