Arthur Shilling

Hi Everyone:

I love the work of Arthur Shilling. Does anyone else find his portraits haunting?

Sharon

Re: Arthur Shilling

Had never heard of him. Wow!!! A Canadian Jawlensky and much more.

I wonder how successful he was during his (short) lifetime.

Sharon, thanks for posting that, tomorrow I'm going to try to do a "Shilling."

Do you know if his paintings are fetching a lot of money now? Hope so.

Re: Arthur Shilling

His work is wonderful. He is known and respected in the Canadian art world for his portraits. His paintings are very different from the 'traditional' Aboriginal style and yet he seems to catch the very essence of his people.

I'm sure his work will only go up in value.

Re: Arthur Shilling

Here's what I did this morning, not a quarter as good as Shilling but moving a bit in that direction. First time I've ever painted with daubs instead of longer strokes.

My wife says it looks as if he's just been beaten up but I said "If you think HE looks bad you should see the other guy."

Re: Arthur Shilling

It is very strange as I did not know him.
Never heard.
And so strange that today, I picked up a book of canadian artist and I saw this amazing portrait by Shilling. Surprised that I did not know him, I then remembered this thread.
Good griefs, very good.

His son Travis is carrying the torch though I prefer the father's work.

Well, on this, I will disagree with you as I preffer Travis Shilling's work much more.
I find him very very inspiring.
Here's one

Re: Arthur Shilling

LGHumphrey - You did a fine job! Not a Shilling, but you just might get there someday.

I agree that Arthur's son, Travis, is a very talented artist in his own right. I do prefer his father's work though. I've had the pleasure of viewing a few of Shilling's original works and they were spellbinding. You struggle to see any detail up close (just dabs and swipes of colour), only to have the work come alive as you walk away. They are very rich in colour and depth.

Arthur Shilling had very, very little formal art training (2 or 3 lessons if I'm not mistaken). He was almost totally self-taught. The instructors tried to tell him 'how' to paint and he just wanted to do his thing.

Re: Arthur Shilling

Lawrence, I do love that portrait of yours.
I like, like you know, the dappling effect

I like Travis better, too.

Re: Arthur Shilling

Travis is getting there, but papa was better. For now, he is my favourite Canadian painter. His paintings trigger an eruption of emotions in me. I was going back to Orillia to look at his work over and over again, never wanting to leave. Photos of his paintings just don't give it justice.
