Pearl Ex and Acrylics?

Can Pearl Ex be used with acrylic paints to make them shimmer? I bought some today, not knowing exactly how to use them or what to use them with, but they looked cool so had to have them haha.

Yep. You can mix lots of kinds of powders with acrylic paint quite happily.

Dear member, the vital link is

I Have used it a lot and it is fun +++. You need to be careful and not go overboard or the effect can look tacky, garish and ostentatious.

Re: Pearl Ex and Acrylics?

How do you mix them? Do you mix them with white paint so that the powder color will show up?

Re: Pearl Ex and Acrylics?

I mix them with gloss medium and the add color if desired. I also use them as a glaze over other colors. The duochrome colors are really special. The yellow to green, pink to blue, blue to turquoise are very special. You can also use them with gel mediums (I prefer gloss).

Be very careful since this is a powder. Consider turning off all fans and using a dust mask as it is not good to breathe this in.

A light careful spritz of water on the powder is also a bit of a help.

Re: Pearl Ex and Acrylics?

I've been reading up on these Pearl Ex powders and they seem very interesting, they apparently can be used in almost anything from fine art acrylic paintings to clay craft projects. I don't believe I got any of the duochrome ones, and I didn't get any of the interference ones but if I like these I'll get more Isn't gloss medium transparent? So would you put a color underneath it first or just put the gloss medium/pearl ex mix straight onto the white of the canvas? I think I have both gloss and gel mediums but I'm not sure.

Use it in whatever manner fits your needs. If it works do it again, if it doesn't, don't do that anymore.
