background advice

I havent posted or painted much lately, but I wanted to put this up for critique. Do you think a cooler blueish background would have worked better? this seems a little muddy to me. Done with watercolor and some charcoal for texture.

Re: background advice

Personally, I really LOVE the background (just my opinion, tho)! Think it works well with the hat--those glasses are fantastic...

Re: background advice

The background is GREAT, in my opinion....and the glasses are pretty cool.
Was this from a photo? I see a little Elvis Costello here, maybe due to the hat and glasses....great job !! Frame it....

Re: background advice

I'm not really the right person to ask, but I LOVE the background, love the painting! The background is dark enough to make the face "pop" but light enough to show all the interesting textures. Very nice work!

Re: background advice

I think it's purfect! The warm glow of the BG sort of shines on hs face and glasses! If it was a cooler bluish, it might have look out of place, maybe????
It's a very unique style you've got!!! Congratulations!!!

Re: background advice

Hmm, I'm not keen on the yellows in the background.

Excellent portrait BTW.

Re: background advice

My original plan was the green tones in the background would work with the reds in the face and tie. I think it got overworked. No, I don't have a website yet. Thanks for the replies.

No, the bg is perfect! Frame it!!! Great job!!! Adding blue will ruin the effect. To me it does not look overworked.

Re: background advice

Background works from my humble opinion. Like the texture, the repeats of the "folding" shown in the shirt. The touches of yellow in the glasses ties in well with the yellow in the background.
