Millford Zornes Passed

February 24th Milford Zornes passed away at the age of 100. There is a big writeup and pictures from the 100th birthday bash on the NWS website

Re: Millford Zornes Passed

Until today, I'd never heard of this remarkable Artist! So, after visiting your link, I googled his name... His work is gorgeous!!! My gosh... at his 100th Birthday Celebration just a month ago, he conducted a workshop at the NWS!

Thanks for sharing this, Carrie. Just last night, I was reading the January
issue of The Artist Magazine that has a full length article and interview with
Milford. An interesting read, thought provoking.

We've lost an American Icon. Rest in peace, Milford.

Re: Millford Zornes Passed

Milford has been one of my watercolour heroes for thirty years. There are a whole bunch of fabulous mid 20th century American watercolourists, Kautzky, Brandt, Pike, Whitney, Hopper and more. Uncle Milfy was hilarious, as he was getting blinder he said he was getting better. I would recommend that anybody interested in watercolour would benefit from getting some books by/about these guys because they are wonderful artists.

Re: Millford Zornes Passed

I was just reading about him in the "Watercolor Artist" Feb edition. What a long fulfilling career! Nick Simmons was in the mag and he was also on the page at NWS website.

I really like American Art Review magazine better than any other, I just happened to pick of Watercolor Artist. I live in a really beautiful, warm place but we don't have museums that features American Artists. Oh well, I'll gladly wait until I get to the mainland.

A true champion of watercolor was Mr. Zornes! He will be missed. To honor him we should really dedicate ourselves to the promotion of the medium.

Rest in peace, and God Bless his family and friends of watercolor!

Re: Millford Zornes Passed

He was at the N.W.S. banquet at Brea, CA in '05 and spoke to us. He had a sense of humor. He was still painting, (!) and had just put out a book and they were shipped out signed. He was obviously pretty fragile then and had macular degeneration to boot. Quite a guy. Really nice.

Re: Millford Zornes Passed

I was fortunate to attend a demo by Milford Zornes in March 2005 at the Huntington Beach Art League. He was then the young age of 97!! What an amazing man - he lectured and demoed for over 2 hours.... I'll never forget that evening... And I was lucky enough to be sitting next to Henry Fukahara (another California watercolorist, in his 90's) and his lovely wife.

There were dozens of his paintings on display, and smaller displays with originals in every size... I wanted to buy something, anything...but I couldn't afford even the tiniest original...

Mr. Zornes auctioned his demo piece, and donated the money to HBAL - it went for over $3600...

The art world is mourning the loss of another great....

Rest in Peace Milford....

Re: Millford Zornes Passed

I am lucky Carrie! I'm still kicking myself for not buying something tho... but even his tiny thumbnails in graphite (like 3x4 or smaller) were going for over $300.

I did a search, and found one full sheet from 1951 going for $2k - and that's a bargain! (I'm thinking about it)

Bill Anderson's Gallery in Sunset Beach is selling Milford's full sheets anywhere from $6500 to $25,000! He was an amazing painter...and the watercolor world is better because of him...
