Cottage Row, Thirsk circa 1940
I found an old picture of Thirsk while looking at Herriot country and decided to do an ink and wash. All comments appreciated. Bill

140# rough, 6"x9" WN paints, cobalt blue, ultramarine blue, raw sienna, burnt sienna, burnt umber, sap green, felt nib.

Bill, this is such a neat countryside pen and wash painting!! It is a bit heavy on the right side making it a bit unbalanced but I'm sure this is the way the scene is IRL!

Thanks, Darla. Yes, that's what I thought, but didn't want to make changes I knew nothing about. Thanks for looking.

HI! Bill like the earthiness of the view up the hill side with it's quiet sunlight.

Nicely done - the pen is not intrusive and the image looks very natural. I don't quite understand why the main cottage has two windows that touch each other, just to the left of the door.
Great to see a pen and wash. Not sure if it should really be in the 'watercolour plus' forum (I'm not complaining, I think it's a great 'medium').
Cheers

Thank you, Patty.
Andrew, thanks for looking. We often have pen and wash in this forum, though, too much ink would send it to mixid media.

Another old building, I just love how this is painted. Wouldn't change a thing.Lenore

Re: Cottage Row, Thirsk circa 1940
Looks great -- I love the treatment over all, and I'm happy to see more line & wash in this forum
The only critiques I'd have is the distant trees down the road would be pushed back if they were bluer, and darker/bluer shadows on the shadowed building walls, and behind the foliage in front of the building might give a little more dimensionality.

Lovely scene Bill.
My eye went to the pale area in front of the cottages in the midground. perhaps the grass colours could be strengthened here with another wash?

Mike and Doug, thanks so much for your comments. I agree with both of you. I can still fiddle with it and make some changes.
