red barn
Hi,
This one is not really finished (I know, I should quit the habit of signing and retouch my paintings afterwards...!!). Yet another study, after Mrs Van Wyk. What a marvelous and generous teacher. May she rest in peace.
Landscapes seem to be hard for me to paint; but this exercise was fun.
So, it's oil on canvas board, 12"x16".

Mike, sorry for the picture, maybe I'll place a better copy on my website if I have time today.
Ron, yes, I understand what you mean as "straighforward". Your paintings are so filled with atmosphere... I'm still learning, and I try to soften the way I paint. Hopefully it will come, some day!
Anthony, yes, Quebec is covered with snow at this time of year!! When I showed this painting to my co-workers, one said it looks like a "cabane ŕ sucre"! In fact as it is a lesson from Mrs Van Wyk, I don't even know where that barn is... I must have put some of what I actually know of a snow scene into it! By the way, did you travel to Quebec?
As I'm doing mostly studies, and can't keep all of them in my house for display, I offer those I find acceptable to friends. This one will be happily given to a dear friend, who just loved it!

Thanks Brian. Can't find words to say what I feel...(remember, I'm French speaking...) but as I said to Rick, same for your paintings too.
I don't know if I'll be able one day to paint more loosely, keeping the painting effective as you and some others on WC can do... I'll certainly continue to work and practise! Positive comments make it easier to go back to another blank canvas and try again!! Not enough time though, for now, because of my day job which is demanding... but the rush is supposed to be temporary...

You mention Helen Van Wyk a few times. I used to watch her show many years ago. The only thing I remember about her is that her first teacher made her paint in black and white for a few years before he let her use colour, and I thought, "I'm never going to try oil painting. How boring!"
How has she affected how you paint? Were you borrowing her style in the use of colour, or light or composition?
Do you use these studies to produce larger works, or just as learning tools?
Sorry for all the questions-just trying learn myself.

Hello Barbara,
I bought many of her tv series through wmht, in dvds. For example, this little red barn was a "follow me" lesson, on serie 7. It was mainly about the color of the snow. I learned so much from her. And it's invaluable how much she can actually say in 30 minutes!
About painting in black and white, it's an incredible learning tool, to know about the values. They're so important. I do it a lot, but in acrylic.
I do the studies to learn... and now and then I do an original painting, if I have inspiration, and to test what I've learn so far! (I'm currently working on portraits... in black and white!)
