Chimp, scratchboard miniature WIP

This is from a chimp posted in Morguefile by Kabir, thanks. It's shown at real size (on my monitor at any rate), 5" x 3.5". I'll be colouring it for sure. I'm sticking to traditional scratching tools on this one although I might use my wire brush for some of the hair.

Re: Chimp, scratchboard miniature WIP

Here's most of the scratching done. I'll be colouring it next and then rescratching some highlights. It's a bit small, even for me lol, but a decent size to get me back into it after a bit of a scratch layoff.

Can't wait to see it with color added!!
I know what you mean by "scratch layoff"... I'm there now, but have a scratch started!

Wow, tiny and cute! I like the pensive, shy pose with the hands and eye contact with the viewer. Nice detail on the hands, particularly at this tiny size.

Re: Chimp, scratchboard miniature WIP

Thanks guys.

This is with colour only. I still need to scratch highlights and maybe add more colour depending on how the scratching goes. I've used watercolours as usual

Re: Chimp, scratchboard miniature WIP

Many thanks

I'm not sure how much difference there is in the finish, but I've managed to match the colour a bit more accurately on the computer and there's a couple of close ups. The closeups are obviously many times larger than the original and show that when I'm working this small, the scratches look pretty lousy to say the least. My goal is to try and put them in the right place

And here's one showing scale

Fun to be back into it

Patrick,

Beautiful work! Your use of color has really made this chip come to life.

The glare in the last picture: did you frame under class? Are you using Ampersand bord?

Re: Chimp, scratchboard miniature WIP

Thanks for the close ups Patrick. Didn't know u owned an electron microscope!

Love this piece and I even love the thought of framing this piece in a frame that has a wood grain feel to it.

Re: Chimp, scratchboard miniature WIP

Great finish, Patrick. It's funny how the colour seems to make the little guy look less sad and gives him/her more of an "aww, me?" look.
