"Green Beach", Carnivan Bay
This is a larger version of a plein air I did during the summer. The photo is not the best as the light was not great when I took it (it is brighter and a bit sharper IRL).
I made a few compositional changes; moved it a couple of inches to the right (more sea/less foreground rock face, made the foreground darker/duller to bring out the bright green sea weed and added a little more variation to where the water meets the beach. Apart from a few other minor amendments, I have remained fairly true to the original plein air. All C&C welcome.

And some details:-
And finally, the original plein air:-

Splendid painting again Michael You say the colours in the photo don't show up right but if IRL it looks like the colours of the the original plein air then it must look awesome.
Are you still doing all your paintings with a knife? Does it take long for one of your oil paintings to dry?

It's fresh and lively, Michael, and I love your treatment of the foregound vegetation.
I must say though that I preferred your treatment of the distant headland in your PA version with the more definite darks.

Beautiful, Michael. Once again you demonstrate that you are a master of this technique.
OK. I tried one Guiness and I still can't come anywhere near your stuff. Sure 'tisn't that I should be takin' TWO of 'em before I start is it?

I always say try, try, try, try,.......... again but you can speed things up with a little Jameson.
Another fine painting Michael. Your greens are stunning but I'd expect nothing less from Erin. Makes me want to pick up me pipes and play Wearing The Green.
I'm with Anne, Are you painting with a knife? I really love to see a WIP.

Beautiful paintings - both of them! I like the atmosphere of the studio painting as well as the warmth of the plein air.

Hi Anne,
Firstly, I played around with the image in photoshop and this is closer to the original.
It depends on the painting but I am probably working about 50/50 knife/brush at the moment. In this case, it was closer to 80/20 knife/brush.
Drying time depends on how I approach the painting. Sometimes I develop the painting to a certain stage with paint + mineral spirit ("lean" mix) and no texture. I then finish it with either pure paint or paint plus a more "fat" medium ( about 50/50 minieral spirit/linseed oil). Depending on the level of impasto the painting is usually dry to the touch in about 10 days. When I paint from start to finish wet-on-wet, I work in the traditional method (fat over lean), usually adding a 60/40 oil/spirit medium to the final layers. These paintings can take 2-3 weeks to be touch dry. In all cases, I never varnish until 4-6 months, by which stage the painting should be fully dry.
