Selling Limited Editions & Prints

Hi everyone,

I am planning to begin offering artwork for sale online through my own website/blog as well as on Etsy. The artwork in question is digital, at least initially, and is 10 inches x 10 Inches.

I wanted to find out what the feeling was on offering both limited edition prints on canvas and open edition prints of the same piece of artwork.

The limited edition prints on canvas would be stretched and mounted as well as be signed/dated and accompanied by a certificate. Since the artwork is digital, I feel that having a limited run of canvas prints would help with the collector aspect as there is no true "original".

The open edition prints would be printed on matte paper and would be signed/dated as well.

Having different pieces of artwork on each would not be a problem either, however, I would like to offer different price points for various pieces of work.
At the moment, the mounted print on canvas is looking to be roughly 4 times the cost of the matte print, so I think some price options are needed.

Thoughts? Comments?

Thanks,

Tommy

Re: Selling Limited Editions & Prints

Hi Tommy
I myself am in the same quandry. I am setting up selling some giclee canvasses and framed prints of my own work, and have been wondering about how to get people to think they are spending on something "authentic". I suppose it depends on where you see it going. For me I think that the majority of the public seem very sceptical about the idea of an "original" digital image, and perhaps rightly so. I decided that the way forward for me was to not worry too much about "authenticity" and just go for getting my work onto as many things as possible to generate exposure for it, and to then use a combination of digital and painting and drawing in the future to make more ambitious works if things go well. Despite being formally trained to masters level I think right now for me it is all about getting some kitsch out there and having a presence, and building from there. please check out my site www.rossaalexander.com and if you fancy some dialogue i am also on saatchi gallery and Artmesh,

Ross Alexander
