The Floral/Botanical Open Exhibition: 2007

Members are invited to post ONE piece of their own floral art, previously shown in the forum since we opened our doors last August.

You may choose a piece because you like it, it's your favourite, you learned a lot from it, it's a first in a new medium, you feel it's a milestone in your artistic development, or any other reason!

Please give relevant information about the piece (size, medium) and also a little description about your reasons for choosing it: please also add a link to the original thread so that others may comment there.

To avoid this thread getting too long, please do not comment here on any other piece.

Let the show begin!

Re: The Floral/Botanical Open Exhibition: 2007

I've chosen this from October's Plant Parade Project, inspired by Van Gogh.
It's acrylics on canvas, 16x24 inches.
This was a complete departure for me - much freer than the work I have been doing. I was simply trying to assimilate some of the feelings VG portrayed in his wor k - the love of colour (particularly yellows), and his joyous application of the paint.

The original Plant Parade - October project.

Before The Storm
16x20 Acrylic for the October challenge, Van Gogh.
I chose this one because I don't do acrylics to often and I am just learning the layering technique of transparency colors with acrylics.

Double Delight, 24x24 Acrylic painted on MDF board.

I chose this one because it was my first white flower, and I learned a bunch painting this. I also won a blue ribbon on this at my local fair.

Re: The Floral/Botanical Open Exhibition: 2007

I chose "Mangos".

"Mangos" is based on a photograph I took at the Marie Selby Botanical Garden this summer and it's acrylic on 18 x 24" gallery wrapped canvas. After enjoying painting "Sea Grapes" with the challenge of portraying strongly backlit leaves, this photo gave me that opportunity to revisit the challenge. Also, this painting was done in someone else's studio while we were forced out of our home while our new AC was being fixed! So, it has sentimental value too in that I got to teach some glazing technique while painting this and thanks to the hospitality of generous hosts, I was able to cope with the stress through painting.

I chose this painting because it is the first time I have painted flowers from life, it was a total revelation. I found it so much easier than painting from photos, not sure why.

Graphite 16X14.

I chose this because I like the way the sunlight is reflected in the water.

This was a large Rose that I did on Bristol with various graphite pencils and then I cut around it and placed it on pastel paper. I was quite proud of myself for drawing this!

Re: The Floral/Botanical Open Exhibition: 2007

I chose this piece because it was the first time I painted a water lily and was able to do reflections. It is in watercolor on Arches 11x15.

Re: The Floral/Botanical Open Exhibition: 2007

I chose Basket of Petunias because I had been working hard at painting a little looser with watercolors. I did achieve that to a small degree, so was pleased with my efforts. I did receive critique about the ropes being distracting, which I had not noticed until it was mentioned. Painted on Arches watercolor block - 12 x 16" cold pressed, various artist's quality watercolors.

This painting represents a turning point in my watercolour studies...the point where I decided to focus on botanical art:

A Watercolour on 140 Arches Hot Press paper.

My first on a black background. Also it was painted from a photo I took myself of these lilies that I grew my self. They gave a really good display.

I chose this piece for my use of technique(sprayed watercolor)which was inspired by the work of Mark Mehaffey. i also love peacock orchids so it's the best of both worlds...art and gardening, my two passions.
