Mac user since 1986. More models and systems than I can remember. Can't speak highly enough.

Love my MacBook. When I visited family recently I gained an increased appreciation for the simplicity and speed of Mac vs. PC. Couldn't wait to get home to my Mac. . . .

Re: Just curious.. How many people on a Mac here?
It all comes down to what you like.
I think PCs run the apps just as well, and of course macs look slicker, but the capability is about even.
Macs are not physically any more secure than PC's Virus-wise, Its simply a matter of them having such a smaller market share, there no point for hackers to make a virus just to cripple a 6% market share when they can go after the other 94%. If the market share goes way up or apple touts its anti-virus too loudly, Im sure that will change, and quickly. But simply put, at present viruses are simply not an issue for 99.999% of mac users. Thats not spin or misinformation.
Ive used both mac and pc's - I prefer macs because of thier simplicity- I use the apps, and don't dig like to dig around under the hood just to make photoshop run like it should have initially after I installed it.
Example (mac): you get a digital camera, take pictures, plug it in, and download your images to a folder (Im not a big fan of iphoto, but "image capture" is great- just downloads to the desktop or folder). No extra software, no special drivers specifically for the Special Deluxe Home Office JR. version of XP. Ive actually logged some good freelance hours solely from showing folks how to download images to from camera to PC. And some of these processes are hilariously Rube Goldberg-esque.
The Airport extreme vs Lynkisis router setup was another good example-
Plug in the airport, name the network, give it a password, and There we go! took less than 5 minutes out of the box - no joke. I can go deeper into settings if need be, but rarely need or want to. I have had massive headaches with any Lynksis router I ever set up - and i've used many.
Video players, updates, and re-installs have just gone FAR smoother since I switched to macs. And the system crashes maybe once per year - as opposed to once per day. No more hunting down infinitely obscure yet utterly critical patches.
For alot of folks, all my irritants might just be second nature, and thats all good, but not for me.

Re: Just curious.. How many people on a Mac here?
Hey there! Haven't been on in awhile; but, when this topic came up in a search, I just had to throw in my two cents worth.
I am the daughter, sister, and wife of three software engineers with over a century of experience between them. They work on pcs because they have to; however, they all three would prefer to work in a Mac environment.
I am now running my 4th Mac since 1991 and I am still loving the Mac OS. Since I began working in graphic design back when the transition was made from hand cutting amberlith to design on the computer, I too can boast just a little experience under my belt. We currently have four computers in our home office, two of which are macs. Both of the macs are much older than the pcs and are running older operating systems; but, who does everyone turn to whenever there is something involving graphics that needs to be done on the computer? Yeah... That is because it is so much easier to do practically everything on the mac.
The learning curve on the Mac is much shallower than that for pc. It drives me nuts if I have to get on my daughter's computer because Windows is basically what the Mac OS was about ten years ago.... but, more complex and not in a good way. The logic of Windows just seems bass ackwards to me.
So yeah, I am a dyed in the wool Mac fan.

Re: Just curious.. How many people on a Mac here?
Hi
I'm on a Mac. I've never used anything else, for work or here in my studio at home. My husband was given a PC as a gift, he'd ask me how do you use this thing and I seriously stumbled in trying to figure it out. For what I did and do the Mac is perfect. My grandkids use both, but like the last poster said I too am a dyed in the wool Mac fan. Any chance of seeing what other Mac fans have accomplished or is there another place where computer art can be seen. I'm new and so far haven't found where if anywhere.
Graphite Grunt - Like you I'm not a big fan of iphoto. There's stuff on the new Macs that I personally can live without but when I'm bored and uninspired I do like to play with Photo Booth and give myself two heads..haha.

I love my Macbook Pro 17" laptop. It is so very easy to use. The only problem I've got with it though is that I can't use the gimp program on it. So I also have a Sony VAIO PC with the XP operating system.

Re: Just curious.. How many people on a Mac here?
Macs are the fastest, simplest, most reliable, and efficient systems. Bought my first in '98, and have used them since. I still use the '98 G3 for my work.
Look only to the throng of followers (Microsoft included) who mimic Apple, and the success and popularity of Ipod, IPhone, and others- Apple's vision causes change in industry.

Paula- About your Mini- go to http://www.apple.com/support/macmini/ and enter a search for your problem. I've found answers and help there anytime it was needed.

Sorry I missed your post here, Paula. Yes, you can always try asking for some technical help here on anything computer related. Whether you get an answer (or a good answer ) or not would remain to be seen. You might be better off using a more computer-centric resource.

Re: Just curious.. How many people on a Mac here?
When I was in year 6, (1996), we had to write a short story. Raised a staunch PC user, it didn't strike me as odd at the time, but I was probably the only student to introduce mac-hating themes....
I'm a wannabe linux person, but in reality I only really use it (extensively) at work, I use XP at home and on my work desktop. But one day I'll get myself a static IP and setup a proper linux box.
But - Macs these days are soooo pretty! No wonder visual people love them. But they used to be so ugly! How did that happen?
Its also fun to tease people who want macs to offer to spraypaint their PC white for them .
Really though, they're not for me, (too controlled), but they're still nice, (did I mention pretty?). I can see why they're popular in certain circles and sort of recommended one to me grandparents.

Re: Just curious.. How many people on a Mac here?
...and one thing I wouldn't touch with a barge pole, is an ipod. Too ubiquitous, too trendy. I prefer mine no-name el-cheapo, with its one working channel, and dodgy screen that needs to be periodically bashed against stuff to stop it turning blue, (great fun on the train). When it dies I'll dismember it with a screwdriver, not have any hope to fix it, then give it a decent burial by poaching any pretty looking innards. Its got character, class, individuality! Something no generic ipod will ever achive!
(ok, off my soapbox - toungue very firmly in cheek here, I don't listen to music much, and won't buy any songs limited to a brand of machine, lol)

MAC USER HERE!! In fact, I'm an elementary computer teacher using a Mac lab. I've got my kinders using iMovie, iPhoto, Garage Band, iWeb, doing podcasts and movies. I doubt if I could so all this with the little ones on a PC.

Re: Just curious.. How many people on a Mac here?
After crashing with two PCs and losing valuable stuff and spending too much $$$ on repairs...I switched to MAC. I love it. The learning curve is not that bad if you have patience. Write things down until you get the hang of it...The only thing that frustrates me from time to time is that where I live in Canada, it is hard to find programs that run on MAC...but once you do, big difference. I love MACs because they are problem and virus free. That is the big problem I had on my PC..viruses and hackers all the time..corrupting files etc. You can get a nice MAC laptop Book for around $1,200 Cdn. that isn't bad at all. Im currently looking to purchase Photoshop for my MAC.
