Gee whiz...how much can he eat?

well.......here is the next in line.......Sells Floto Train circa 1931...not sure of the town, but it could be anywhere...... 16X22.....CP 300lb
kilimanjaro.....not a full sheet for a change, needed a break for a bit.
I will paint the elephant and the BOYS in color .......such a cute image of the baby elephant.......the younger brother in the back appears
a bit apprehensive ........his back is arched and his arm is out as far as
it can go......what a cute image......I loved this photo....had a Norman
Rockwell kind of feel to it, only he would have painted faces!!

I am NO Rockwell........I aspire to be 1/2 as good.....

SO.....enough of that
here is the drawing:I darkened it so you could see the pencil better

and thus far on the sepia...yes,.... CHAR.....more sepia ..hehe

all comments and suggestions are most welcome and appreciated

Greg

Re: Gee whiz...how much can he eat?

here is tonight's progress....sometimes the camera plays tricks....
it is very sepia looking IRL....but sometimes the dark areas look black,
I only have sepia on the palette

the best way to create the ground texture is to dry brush with a light
value and let it skip across the page....pigment to water ratio needs to be just right....when dry you can add shadows to the white areas that
the brush missed, and they will look like hard dirt or rocks jutting out of the ground.....then I painted in the grassy weeds....in a few stages,
adding some shadows when dry....

for the wood slats....brush on a good even wash, then lift out some areas
with a liner brush, just damp......then when dry darken around those areas with a thin liner and add a few knots, and it's wood ...of course
this is much easier in one color!!!! ....but that is how I handle it in
color as well......

here is the overall image.......

thanks everyone

Greg

You handle the tones in sepia very well Greg. Love the contrast on the underside of the railway truck.

Re: Gee whiz...how much can he eat?

Greg,
From a large crowd and a dozen elephants to two little boys and one little elephant. Love the change of pace.

I kind of like the continuity of using the sepia as a background in your paintings, saving the color for the main subjects. It reminds me of The Wizard of Oz movie that begins in black and white and then WHAM! color when Dorothy opens the door after the house lands in Oz.

Looking forward to watching this progress.

Sylvia

Signing on for this one too!!

It's great so far. Those boys look ready to run if that trunk gets too aggressive.

Cute -- and of course -- boys!!

You make painting wood sound easy! You make painting a crowd look easy!

I'll be watching, too!
