Re: 12 monthly challenges November 2007

Thank you so much Nickel.

I would like to share a poem dedicated to man.

The Blind Men and the Elephant

American poet John Godfrey Saxe
(1816-1887)
based the following poem
on a fable which was told in India
many years ago.

The Blind Men and the Elephant

It was six men of Indostan
To learning much inclined,
Who went to see the Elephant
(Though all of them were blind),
That each by observation
Might satisfy his mind

The First approached the Elephant,
And happening to fall
Against his broad and sturdy side,
At once began to bawl:
"God bless me! but the Elephant
Is very like a wall!”

The Second, feeling of the tusk,
Cried, “Ho! what have we here
So very round and smooth and sharp?
To me ‘tis mighty clear
This wonder of an Elephant
Is very like a spear!”

The Third approached the animal,
And happening to take
The squirming trunk within his hands,
Thus boldly up and spake:
"I see,” quoth he, the Elephant
Is very like a snake!”

The Fourth reached out an eager hand,
And felt about the knee.
“What most this wondrous beast is like
Is mighty plain,” quoth he;
“ ’Tis clear enough the Elephant
Is very like a tree!

The Fifth, who chanced to touch the ear,
Said: "E'en the blindest man
Can tell what this resembles most;
Deny the fact who can
This marvel of an Elephant
Is very like a fan!? “

The Sixth no sooner had begun
About the beast to grope,
Than, seizing on the swinging tail
That fell within his scope,
"I see,” quoth he, “the Elephant
Is very like a rope!”

And so these men of Indostan
Disputed loud and long,
Each in his own opinion
Exceeding stiff and strong,
Though each was partly in the right,
And all were in the wrong!

(A Possible) Moral:

So oft in theologic wars,
The disputants, I ween,
Rail on in utter ignorance
Of what each other mean,
And prate about an Elephant
Not one of them has seen!

Help!!

I finished this sketch yesterday but I have no idea how to approach the hair, what do you think about pasting some cotton wool in that area or maybe sisal will be a better product .

Anghwar OMG, look at Albert! Rock on, now don't add cotton for his hair, poor thing, he just didn't have a comb or a momma......lol. Awesome drawing and your first for the month. I really like his cheeks and lips. I see a softness to his persona that is charming. Then his lack of hair, so far, adds gentleman flair. I tried so hard to get one done today. Just not in the cards. Tomorrow I own you two. ps I like the poem. thanks

Thank you Nickel, I always thought Albert had a soft sweet nature, I am glad if I was able to at least portray that! Tomorrow I will try to tackle the hairdo - oh I know a pony tail or braid perhaps :-).

EP thank you, the challenge is TEXTURE not one mail a day (I hope)

Nickel I adore Paul Ehrlich so professorish, the strokes in the beard and hair is yummy, and I liked the placement of your portrait in a circle in your Rubens painting.

Re: 12 monthly challenges November 2007

Hi Ladies, EP, yes you have to paint all the mail!!!!!!!!!!

haha, only kidding

The size I'm doing is small, 4x4 inches or so.
I'm going to try and do as many as I can.

Hi Anghwar, thank you, you are right, the challenge is texture.
I'm glad you like the circle,
for some reason I like to put my Ruben studies in circles.

So what are you using on Albert cotton or sisel?

Hi Susan, you are our classical jewel.
Glad you liked the pink & green!

Hi Retha, I hope you get to join us in sorting the mail!

See ya later, Nickel

Re: 12 monthly challenges November 2007

Here's the first mail delivery. I wanted to practice sketching in ink using only diagonal lines, all parallel. On the last fellow, Alfred Nobel, I tried to add his hair with diagonals running the other direction and I don't like the result.

Anyhow, here are four pieces of mail, in my fountain pen, in my sketchbook.

Eduard Buchner, John Dalton, Mendeleeff, and Alfred Nobel.

Cheers,
