Well I think I'm doing better with the longer poses, but the short ones are killer for me!

First 2 minute poses:

Five minute poses:

20 minute:

20 minute:

All stepping stones...not stumbling blocks...

None are drawn/corrected after the buzzer...

Bob,
We all have trouble with the short poses except one or two of the real smart ones on this site, but someone once said to me you don't HAVE to draw the whole figure in the time Just make sure what you do draw is accurate! So now all we have to do is not panic!!!!
Your two longer poses are pretty accurate so eventually you should be able to draw faster?

Bob...short poses are a killer for me too. I feel like I just start and the pose is changing. I've been working this year on improving my speed and it has helped a bit, but not enough for the gesture.

I really like the first of the two 20's.

The long ones are very nice, I especially like the faces. I wouldn't worry about the short ones! I say that because mine usually suck.

The last two are beautiful Bob! The tenderness in the faces. I realize you said you feel you don't have time to do the whole figure, but you'll get there. You are so close!
I bet if you concentrate on the quick poses more, you'll get the hang of getting the whole thing down quickly and then you'll have a head start when starting a long pose. Then you will also have time to do your sensitive portraits.

That last twenty minute is a cracker Bob well done, for the quick ones wait until Pauline gets back and see what she can do with 20 seconds

Re: Life Drawing Oct. 21st

It seems to be nearly unanimous that we have difficulty with short poses, although I do know a few artists who do a very credible job with the quickies. I'm not one of them! Congratulations on the terrific drawings you are getting. The last one is truly lovely.

Re: Life Drawing Oct. 21st

there is a sensitivity, especially with the faces Bob, and accurate work.

I think with the quicker ones perhaps you are too concerned with trying to get a 'good' drawing, and maybe could try to get them just as gestural drawings with bolder lines.

Mac

Bob
The 20 minute poses are great. Really nice proportions, lines and expression.

Everyone has a different approach but I view the quick poses as an exercise, where the process is more important than how the result looks. I try to capture the form in a couple of lines, I never have time to put in facial features. In my case, the lines are never perfectly placed but if they suggest the form of the body, the pose and the balance I'm satisfied and I hope I'm improving.

The drawings show promise Bob, the quick poses demonstrate what you know about the figure its the longer poses that will give you that knowledge.

Re: Life Drawing Oct. 21st

Thanks for all the support and comments....

Trevor, I admire the artist that can... with one executed line form a proportion...my lines are still searching for the accurate edge...

Thanks, I was a bit happier with the longer poses, but they were done in graphite and I erased...bad lines...till I got it right...

Karen, looks like I have company...on the short pose. It seems the gesture pose is really for warming up...most in our Thur. night group are really good...which is good for me...Thanks for your comments...

Jack, funny uh, your eye knows where the line should go, but the hand gets stupid in the beginning..LOL! Thanks for your comment too!

Tracey, thank you for your kind comments. I have always drawn faces, but have had no formal art education other than watercolor work shops.... and my own self education...

Dave, you are right, Pauline and many others here are masterful with the quick line...my goal is to be better... than I am now...

Thanks for commenting ...BTW, I like the last one too...

Gary, I appreciate your comments, and feel the short pose/gesture is something I must do better with as it will also improve my portraits too!

Mac, thanks for looking in...you have the quick poses down...and your quick portraits at the art fair were killer...I'm not fast enough to do that, but want to be...better and quicker at it...

Ian, thanks for the tips and your comments...

You looked in too, Bill, thanks...for your views, it helps...
