Re: Pink Rose

I am not the best painter. I tried to paint a rose, but I could not capture its "lightness". I think you accomplished that.

As the petals go down into the rose, I think the value needs to be darker, so that you can see it is deeper, and then makes the petal edge next to it pop more. The problem is, the petals are so subtle (which is great), but they blend into each other too much. But other than that, it is very good. It looks light and airy, and I like how each petal and leaf is a different color. The background is interesting and makes the rose look more glow-y. I hope this helps.

Re: Pink Rose

I'm not the best painter either And I'm afraid to add more paint to it. Actually, I could add more paint...but I don't know where I need to glaze or drop it in. Thanks for the comment!!

Re: Pink Rose

Welcome to the forum Marcia, 'cos I don't think I've seen your work before

Well done with the shape - it has a nice 'wild' rose feel to it.
The colours also are good!
The problem is one of tone - so it won't take much!
I think you need (in future paintings) to go extremely lightly on the lightest parts first - barely and colour so you are retaining the light in the petals (which need to be delicate) - and then gradually build tone towards the deepest part of each petal as well as the flower centre. As cjorgensen suggests, it's a matter o playing light against darks to get the contrast.
It's already working on the right/central area

Hope this helps!
BTW - what's the size? ........ and, if you make your image size 500 pixels wide, you'll give the rest of us a better view for commenting

Re: Pink Rose

Thanks for looking and commenting Maureen.
I didn't measure it but it's about 14x9. Sorry it wouldn't fit all the way on the scanner.
When I first started glazing I did keep it very light. I think I put about 3 to 4 glazes on different petals. When it completely dried I wet the petals one by one and dropped in additional color. To me, the right side is all jumbled up and I can't tell what goes with what!
And thanks for the Welcome. I've been posting in w/c and pastels since I joined. I've only been doing anything artistic for about 8 months and teaching myself with the help of you good people!
Deepest part of each petal...ok, if you're painting from a photo just try to "copy" what you see?
Do you think painting flowers from still life is easier?

Re: Pink Rose

Marcia - have you seen this little video?

I think painting from photos - which is what many do (including myself at times!) has to be done carefully.
Photos flatten the image and also play around with the colour and tones, so you do have to make judgements for yourself.
It's much better to paint from life when you can - much easier to judge colour, tone, delicacy, formation. The problem with flowers is that they wilt quickly!
I have a painting of a rose somewhere in the forum here - I'll add the link so you an see if it helps

Re: Pink Rose

Wow Maureen thanks for the link that rose is really pretty. I've been sitting and studying it! The video I've not seen, or at least I don't think I have. I have dial-up and it takes about an hour to view a 3 min video. I rarely have the patience to wait! But thanks for adding the link for that as well. Maybe one day when things are slow I can watch it.
