Portrait of a Chinese boy

Hi,everyone!
I am working on a portrait which seems to have some problems. It is based on a photo and I put somethings at the background and forth place to make it look surreal.

Any C&C would be appreciated.

Well, you've achieved your goal nicely. The background does look surreal without taking anything or any attention away from the child. It's a delightful piece and an excellent portrait.

You have a vivid imagination having looked at your website. All very good and you're very talented.

What a marvelous painting. You have a wonderful imagination. The shell on his tummy looks a little out of place or odd.

Re: Portrait of a Chinese boy

I like the surrealistic feel of the child's portrait, revealing the whimsical imagination and curiosity that every child has. Perhaps the problem you're having is the red color of the shirt contrasting with the cool blue tones of the background. A suggestion I have is to maybe introduce some of the red color in to your background, the conch shell already has some of it, or introduce some blue into the red shirt. Also look into the possibility of a vignette or fading of color at the bottom of the portrait, where the shirt and hand are.

You've done a great job so far, keep on painting!

Re: Portrait of a Chinese boy

The way you took the stripe in the shirt and extended into the backround is very pleasing, I am not so fond of the arching ribbon(?) over his head, I think it distracts from his face. Over all I like this painting very much, thanks for posting (again) and you do have a great website.

I love the painting and totally get the surreal vibe to it. I do agree that the shell does look somewhat disconnected from the whole but, again, that may be intentional? Great job!

Re: Portrait of a Chinese boy

Hello fengwei,

Crits are often a matter of personal opinion and that is all I can offer here. I very much like the way you have used the stripes in the boys pullover to work with the background. I would want to make even more of that, to be bolder with the concept over the whole painting. I think the shell suffers from being the same colour as the pullover, but then it would be hard to make it otherwise as the painting is at present.

I expect to be going to China soon, although probably not Beijing. I do have great respect for Yuqi Weng, but really do like Kuang Jian's Dislocation.

Hello Fengwei,
great job...I really like the feel of the painting. I was thinking maybe a little darker shadow from the shell on the little guys shirt might makr it come forward and help the similar colors of the shel and shirt.
