Re: Poppy fields

I think this is beautiful. Perhaps developing a little stronger color and presence of the poppies at a distance on the left would be the only thing I could see but that would be it. This may not be what they were looking for but their loss.

Re: Poppy fields

The texture and color of those poppies are marvelous, very real. To compose something is to give it shape. Like music. It is just sound, but it becomes music when order is imposed upon it according to the rules of musical notation and so forth. The same situation exists with art, only here we are concerned with whats seen. Whats seen of course is the view, a million shifting patterns throughout the course of the day. It becomes a specific composition when an artist chooses a particular portion and aspect of that view to paint. As in music there are rules that help us accomplish this. In your painting here, the composition is basically dividing the canvas into two equal portions from right top corner to bottom left corner. This leaves us with a cluster of poppies up close but no field of poppies in which they grow. We are of course expecting to see a field because of the title. In making a composition we also single out the focal point and enhance it. The focal point is just that, the place our eye focuses when we first see the painting. Closely related but not necessarily the same is the point of interest. The thing that our brain responds to and says in effect..."oh lets have a closer look at this!" Neither one of these things occur in the painting. There is one poppy that stands out from among the others, but that is mainly because it is in the center of the canvas...something we want to avoid with the focal point. Going back to the analogy of music, we have a great blast of jumbled sound in the corner. But no music. Lets do some composing. This is not meant to be a work of art, only to demonstrate what happens when you impose a pattern/arrangement/composition on your painting:

The point of interest now stands out due to a shift in color and also placement (still too centered) and the blast of sound has become individual notes of beauty. There is a field and a far horizon of treesd and clouds to contemplate as you take a closer look. I hope this does answer your question. I suppose they cannot do...but I wish these "showing/judging " affairs would inform one of why something is or is not good.

CorvusKorax

Thanks so much, You really made my day, maybe they have a point.
I have made a note of what you said.

Yes I agree, If they would only say why, as my other one was not chosen because of " weak drawing skills" and it is an abstracty one.

Re: Poppy fields

I am no expert in composition so I am reading a lot about the subject so I can learn. Use the inernet, it is a handy tool I can not tell you where but I even found a checklist to see if composition was right it was more "don't" than a "do" list so it helped me on what to avoid. There is also nice people here that are willing to help and not just say it is a bad job.

By the way.....I am going to try your technique it is very interesting!

Re: Poppy fields

beautiful texture perel, wonderful colors, very nicely done

i think you should do them again tho, and just spread them out a teeny bit more as they are cramped into their corner like a boquet in a vase too small ... poppies like to sway in the breezes and grow in vast fields if given the chance

and thank you, i think yours inspired mine a bit ... such beautiful color combinations

Re: Poppy fields

RE: Poppies........One of my favorite, and i really like the painting. Opening it up would help the composition, but I love the effect the tissue paper has on flowers. I am going to have to try this sometime, but I am really bad with water colors. Wonder how acrylics would work? Now you got me thinking. Keep up the good work..........Lenore

Re: Poppy fields

I'm shocked mostly about the "haven't sold one this year". Your picture "Walk in the Woods", for instance, is absolutely gorgeous and special. You have a wonderful view of natural things and a lovely sense of color and light. Don't ever take commercial things as a judgment on you as an artist.
